Daniels' bet: Privatize lottery
By Mary Beth Schneider and Theodore Kim

Gov. Mitch Daniels has pitched a plan to legislative leaders to privatize the Hoosier Lottery to raise money for college scholarships. Jane Jankowski, the governor's press secretary, said the governor is planning to make a "significant" announcement Thursday morning about higher education in Indiana, but she gave no other details.

Sen. Luke Kenley, the Noblesville Republican who is chairman of the Senate Tax and Fiscal Policy Committee, said Daniels' budget director, Charles E. Schalliol, briefed key fiscal leaders several weeks ago on the plan to lease out the state lottery to a private firm in exchange for cash.
That money, Kenley said, would go toward scholarships, as well as courting high-caliber professors for the state's universities.

Kenley said the idea drew disapproval from lawmakers, including Republicans. He said he and other lawmakers tried to persuade Schalliol away from the idea because the lottery pays for a number of programs, including teacher pensions.

1. the only way lottery gets passed in the first place
is telling people it will fund education. Under this plan it won't even do that anymore. Do people really expect anything positive will come out of this? Do they think jackpots will be bigger? Not when you have to bring home the bacon to shareholders. This is unbelieveble that anyone would even propose this, but then again, they sold off the interstate in several states so I guess it sounds like a good idea to someone!

2. No, but people here are have been all up-in-arms about ..
... the state budget crunch. Mitch has been breaking off and selling the state and its civil agencies in bits and pieces since he took office under the premise of 'balancing the budget' and 'bringing in money to the state' ... nobody seems to recall the bang-up job he did as Bush's
Budget Director in 2000, though ... :puke:

5. Ditch Mitch
I'm waiting for him to propose a 75 year lease of state universities to a private consortium to pay for kindergarten.

Every day there's a headline regarding privatizing something else. Where does it end?

7. It ends like a game of Monopoly...
When all the cash & property are in the hands of Mitch's contributers, and the rest of us are bankrupt.

9. That's exactly it.
I suddenly have the urge to buy some poster board and make up a Monopoly game themed on Daniels and his idiot friends.

12. media doesn't ever mention jobs being lost
Hello everyone. I'm new here. One thing I noticed the media keeps neglecting is mentioning people working for the lottery that will lose their jobs if Governor Jack succeeds in getting it privatized. I work for a company connected with the lottery and my job may be impacted also, so I'm really fond of our wonderful governor these days.
