Bill bans smoking if kids are in cars

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana smokers would have to quit -- at least while driving with young passengers -- if state Rep. Charlie Brown has his way.

A bill by the Gary Democrat would ban smoking in vehicles in which children under age 13 are present.

"So many adults do not realize the harm they are doing to their own children by having them in the back seat of a car while they are smoking," Brown said. "Whether the window is up or down, it's just as bad."

The House Judiciary Committee endorsed the bill 8-1 yesterday and sent it to the Democrat-controlled House, where Brown predicted it would pass. Its chances in the Republican-controlled Senate were unclear.

1. I assume this is like the bans proposed (passed?) in other states

that police don't "look" for it - but if stopped can issue a fine.

2. What they should ban, IMO ...

.. are idiots who drive with their big boom-thumpa stereos shakin' the whole car while they have small children/toddlers/infants trapped in the car with them !!

And we wonder why little ones nowadays can't listen/hear? They probably have mild brain damage to go along with the hearing loss !!

3. I have said this for years...

if you have a child in your car and you are smoking it is child abuse. Plain and simple. It is a proven fact that second hand smoke is as dangerous, if not more dangerous than smoking itself. The child has no choice, if you need a cigarette that bad, pull over to the side, get out, and smoke.
