Bennett first GOP mayor in Terre Haute in 57 years

A woman walking out of the polls at Meadows Elementary School early Tuesday afternoon flashed Mayor Kevin Burke a thumbs-up in support while leaving, as the mayor smiled and briefly returned the gesture.

But such support did not come from a majority of voters Tuesday.

Burke received 107 votes less than Republican challenger Duke Bennett in the city’s mayoral race, based on unofficial results released by the Vigo County Clerk’s office. Bennett became the fourth consecutive candidate to beat an incumbent Terre Haute mayor in the past four election cycles. Burke won the Democratic primary in May, becoming the first Democratic incumbent in 16 years to do so.

Yet he came up short in making history again Tuesday night.

Burke received 5,947 votes, or 49.55 percent of the ballots cast, compared with Bennett’s 6,054 votes, or 50.45 percent, the unofficial results report.

Thank you, "Democrats for Duke," you slimy little assholes who decided that because Burke wasn't kissing your ass enough, you had to toss him out of office. You get what you deserve.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, Stephanie Salter summed it up nicely in today's paper:
