Jill Long Thompson Says Daniels Property Tax Plan Falls Short
Former Congresswoman Jill Long is running for the Democratic nomination for governor.

Jill Long Thompson Says Daniels Property Tax Plan Falls Short

Indianapolis, IN - Former Congresswoman Jill Long Thompson reacted tonight to Governor Mitch Daniels' plans to fix Indiana's property tax debacle:

"I applaud Governor Daniels for finally, after three years, stepping up and proposing a plan to correct the problem of spiraling property taxes in Indiana - a problem that he created.

"Many of the ideas in his plan I agree with and have proposed as I campaign for Governor. In order to control property taxes we need to do things like cap how much taxes can go up in any given year and reign in excessive spending by local governments and school districts.

"Unfortunately, this plan fails to meet Governor Daniels' own criteria of being fair, far reaching and final. Placing the burden of a lowered property tax solely on an increased sales tax, a regressive tax that disproportionately affects lower and middle-income Hoosiers, is hardly fair. And calling for a plan that lacks review and restructuring of our entire tax code is anything but far reaching and final.

"Our tax code needs to be fair, equitable and transparent. We need a complete overhaul that brings our tax code into the 21st Century, creates a positive climate for businesses to come to and grow in Indiana and makes living in Indiana affordable again, yet doesn't unfairly target low and middle-income Hoosiers."

1. Jill Long Thompson
So, do you think the lady has a prayer of winning?

I remember her fondly from her prior service to the state, but I'm not sure how well known she is outside of Northern Indiana.

I'm just happy she's running, since I'll gladly vote FOR her (as opposed to just voting AGAINST Mitch Daniels, whom I heartily despise!)

2. I think Jill can beat Daniels
Daniels didn't do shit about the property tax. When our mayor asked Daniels for a special session of the legislature, Daniels brushed him off. Daniels' plan for property tax relief will not do squat for home owners that are now suffering.

I will also say that if Jill were to announced that she favors an end to daylight savings time in Indiana, she will get a lot of votes just on that.

3. I Sure Hope You're Right About Jill's Chances
I got a bunch of "Ditch Mitch" bumper stickers from a guy I know in Indy, wondering if I'd have any takers (I live in a conservative NE community near Amish country). The guys I work with snapped them up in less than an hour!

When even the conservatives hate him, it's obvious he's going to be a one-termer. I just hope the damage can be undone.

Incidentally - in regard to DST - the argument that businesses outside of Indiana needed us to join the "mainstream" never made sense to me. Anyone too stupid to figure out what time it was in Indiana shouldn't be running a corporation or ANYTHING much bigger than a hot dog stand!
