1. What the heck happend with the vote in Iowa City? |
|
@ 10:00 the news had the ban winning by 200 votes w/1500 absentee ballots to be counted, this morning the ban went down by 2000 votes? Even as bad at math as I am, that doesn't add up!

3. Yeah I don't like it... |
|
Perhaps the last two big elections have me a little more pessimistic than I should be, but I don't like to think about "technical problems" when it comes to voting.
I was talking to some co-workers about this today though, maybe they should try this again next year, not to get it to pass, but to get the young kids energized about going to vote. It's sad when it takes a ballot initiative like this to drum up record turnout!

4. A couple more Dems scored victories in Davenport |
|
Mike Matson in the eighth ward scored a decisive victory as did a guy named Nate Brown in the First ward, which is composed entirely of working class people and has one helluva state rep in Elesha Gayman as well. And in a mild upset, Bill Boom won the inner city Third Ward surprisingly easily. So Davenport will be reasonably progressive for at least two years.

5. Marion/Cedar Rapids Elections |
|
Edited on Wed Nov-07-07 05:35 PM by IA_Seth
The one contested race that pitted a registered Dem against a registered Rep... the Republican, Sprague, won. It isn't overly suprising to me though considering the political layout of Marion (very conservative bunch). I saw them both recently give their shpeels and Sprague did 10 times better than his opponent, so it wasn't all that big of a surprise.
In the mayoral race Paul Rehn won, which is again not all that surprising. Paul is registered no party but his wife is a registered Republican and I suspect he is as well.. but he was also a sitting council member and the mayor pro-tem so he had that incumbent's advantage.
In Cedar Rapids it looks Monica Vernon won over Sarah Henderson. I am pretty sure they are both Republicans, but Monica was supported by the labor community and several Democrats and has a history of non-partisan work with the Chamber of Commerce. She'll be a better fit with the other council members I think. In district four Chuck Swore, the incumbent who is also backed by labor, will face a runoff in December. Tom Podzimek retained his at-large seat. I don't know for sure Swore or Podzimek's party affiliation but I know Podzimek is a Sierra club member and spoke to the Democrats often 2 years ago.. Swore is a union guy and is backed by unions but I wouldn't assume his party from that I guess.
Thats all I know off the top of my noggin.
Edit to add:
It looks like Joel Miller, our former chair of the Linn Dems and current Linn Co Auditor, was voted out as Mayor of Robins by a mere 25 votes.

6. Too bad about Joel Miller, I like him. |
|
In Waterloo Quentin Hart beat out John Kinkaid for the 4th Ward seat.
There is a run-off for the At-Large seat between Steve Schmitt and Dave Buck
In Cedar Falls there is a run-off for the 4th Ward between Kamyar Enshayan and Dave Sires.
That's about it.
