Jeez I wish the Big(?) 10(?) would play a round robin |
|
Losing to Western Michigan in the last game is so damned embarrassing. Why can't the B10 play round robin? Wait, I know - each B10 school is supposed to run up 4 easy wins over schools like East Timor and Key West U. and then get bowl bids where they get embarrassed because they have played nobody. Whoopsie didn't work. Most of my life Iowa has ended the year against Minnesota in a game which has over the decades produced some real memories. What kind of memories will there be from this charade?

1. Maybe that the 2007 Hawkeyes sucked? |
|
And that Ferentz has one year to straighten it out?

I have never been a fan of O'Keefe's play calling. My Freshman year at Iowa, was Ferentz's first year and I remember yelling in the stands at some of the plays O'Keefe called. I hope O'Keefe is let go and they bring in someone who actually calls plays that look downfield and are more agressive.

6. Definitely need to upgrade offense |
|
The Hawk defense got a lot of stops this year. Then the offense would come on the field and go three and out. Don't know if it was a young O-line, a young quarterback or both.
The kids got to know how to walk before they can run.

7. They were young, but the coaches need to open up the playbook |
|
Iowa won when Albert Young ran the ball down the other teams throats. They lost when they passed the ball all the time. That is mostly play calling.
Iowa also had some playmakers (D. Johnson- Koulianos and Damian Sims come to mind) that needed to get the ball in their hands in the open field. Illinois had a WR that was great and would line at QB and RB, so he'd get the ball. Iowa needed to run end around with Johnson-Koulianos and put him at QB and do sweeps, run some flare passes to Sims, screens, whatever to get those guys the ball.

4. So what's our odds of making a bowl now? |
|
We're ninth in line for a bowl (ahead of only Northwestern and Minnesota), and the Big Ten tie-in bowls have to take a 7-5 team, leaving one 7-5 team ahead of us out of the picture, and if another bowl (a Pac 10 tie-in, perhaps?) takes a Big Ten team, it has to take the extra 7-5 team. That doesn't leave Iowa with great odds to make a bowl ... though at the same time our fans travel well, so it's not an impossibility -- someone might want us just for that.

How hard is it to get into the Motor City Bowl in Detroit? Great place to 'vacation' over the holidays!
