Calling All Convention Goers!! |
|
In which district will you be attending? Are you seeking election for anything? (National delegate, SCC, Affirmative Action Chair, etc.)
What do you hope to hear and/or see?

1. All the Debis will be attending the First District Convention in Dubuque |
|
We all signed up as Obama alternates and I just got the news that I will be seated as a delegate - still hoping Mr. Debi and Debi Jr. can get seated as well.
I am not running for any position (unless I end up on State Platform Committee) but am looking to elect State Cenral Committee members that believe in Iowa's First in the Nation position AND will fight for it!

5. District One Platform ? |
|
Hi. I'm new here. I was a first time delegate at the District One convention yesterday, but I was carpooling and my ride wanted to leave at 8 p.m. so I missed some things.
Does anyone know the results of the platform on the moratorium on coal plants? I'm specifically wondering about AE5 and AE11 under Energy Environment. Any other news of note on the remaining platform items? Are there minutes or a report posted somewhere online so I could look at everything?
Also, can anyone tell me who won the national convention delegate spots for Obama?
Thanks!

6. Hi Valuesvoter! Welcome to DU |

We left about 9:30 and the platform STILL wasn't completed.
I heard that everything ended around 11:00ish and the remaining planks all got passed (which is odd for AE11 b/c if I remember it was set aside with GL?? since the two were somewhat opposed....I guess that's what happens at 11:00 at night!!) I'm sure they'll get ironed out during the State Platform process.
Where are you from? I wonder if we saw each other at convention. Are you planning on going to state?
d.
:hi:
On edit:
Oh, and we only stayed long enough to find out who the female delegate for Obama was - there was a 4-way run-off for the two male delegates and then they were headed back into voting for the male alternate. I don't know how that turned out either.

8. state convention question |
|
Do the district conventions always last that long?
I'm still relatively new to this process. When were the delegates for the state convention decided, or do we have delegates for the state convention? It seemed like that should have been the next step, but I was under the impression we were voting for people to go to Denver.
Thanks!

9. State Convention delegates were determined at County Conventions |
|
If you were a delegate to District Convention then you are also a delegate to State Convention.
I did not attend the 2004 District Convention, so I don't know how long it went. But the 2000 District Convention did not got that long. I think having so many new and enthusiastic people added to the process made it take longer (I wouldn't trade it, though.) And I think we all better plan on State Convention going for some time (especially after I heard that 2004 State Convention went into the wee hours of Sunday morning...)
I hope that other Iowa DUers will correct any mistakes I'm making about the process.

3. I attended the 4th district convention |
|
The delegate count went 4 Obama, 2 Clinton.
I left at 7:15 when they were just starting the discussion on the platform. I will write more about how the convention went tomorrow.

4. The Debis didn't make it all the way through convention (headed home about 9:30 from Dubuque) |
|
Got all the way through State Central Committee elections/National Delegate elections/State Committee eletions BUT STILL missed a portion of the Platform!!
How'd others do?

10. My wife stayed nearly to the end. She was kept busy timing the |
|
speeches of those who wished to go to the National Convention, and she was collecting ballots and busy on the rules committee. She was elected to go to the state convention to serve on the rules committee in Des Moines.

13. She thought of that too but didn't have time to make any. She was |
|
aware of a group from Waterloo however who didn't want pot legalization. I'll have to get more of that story from her. We'll be in Des Moines, I am quite sure.

12. I left Dubuque Senior HS at midnight |
|
and platform still not resolved. Made a change to State Central Committee and elected Erin Sloby(?) from Blackhawk I believe. At 11 still needed to elect mail state central committee, male Obama National and male Obama alternate, as well as elector. We were thrilled to see Helen McClain (Dubuque activist) going to National as Hillary supporter and Kathleen Weber going for Obama. Many of you in the First District got phone calls from these ladies - they worked their hearts out and that upfront work really paid off since everyone had only one minute speech.
