My teleconference with Steve King
So Monday night Steve called me with a "live tele-town hall meeting". He never took my question but I was fortunate :eyes: enough to hear 45 minutes of questions and opinions from King and my fellow citizens of the fifth district.
Here are some highlights that I had to endure:

  • George Soros and Move On have targeted him this election so he needs our money
  • If we could drill in ANWAR, all of our problems would be solved
  • We went to war on faulty intelligence
  • We've turned a corner in Iraq
  • Nancy Pelosi and the San Francisco values are ruining our country
  • Mexicans are ruining our country
  • George Soros is ruining our country
  • Even though Exxon make 40 billion last quarter, their share prices went down so don't get mad at them
  • Global climate change is a hoax
  • George Soros and his liberal friends are gonna go after him
  • etc.

The most painful part of this wasn't listening to King but listening to my fellow Iowans. :banghead:
Some of these people make Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter look like moderates. How did my state become so ultraconservative and obtuse?

To give you an idea of how bad it is over here, the last caller (from King's hometown of Kiron) proposed that King be McCain's VP for "youth and balance"!

1. how did you get involved in a Steve King town hall meeting?
My guess is you are not the kind of voter he reaches out to.
Was there any voice of reason on the call or were they all syncophants?

3. I don't know! Maybe I'm on some list from my futile phone calls to his office.
One guy asked why we went to war for oil. That's when King talked about faulty intelligence, Tenet's "slam dunk", and he mumbled something about how much Bush knew and when he knew it. But other than one other person complaining about eminent domain problem with her property, the rest were all sycophants.

At one point he let it slip that about 90 percent of us on the phone were repubes.

Which reminds me. We also had the opportunity to vote on a couple polls too!

Question about the Iraq war:
Press 1 if you think we should immediately withdraw.
Press 2 if you think we should stay until we are victorious.

Results:
10% Withdraw
90% Stay the course!!

(apparently there isn't an option for a phased withdraw in Steveworld)

The another question was somethng about our opinion of the GOP today compared to one year ago:
press 1 if you think the GOP is better
press 2 if you think the GOP is worse
press 3 if you think the GOP is the same

The results are supposed to be on his website. I just looked and couldn't find it.

7. Did they define what 'victory' was? (couldn't help myself)
Anyone on the call offer to join the Army to help get that 'victory'?

10. Ha. Not much chance of that.
I think about half of them were over 80 and/or senile.

Besides, haven't you heard? Things are looking up in Iraq!

2. How did your state become so ultraconservative and obtuse?
ANSWER: (IMO) Northwest Iowa is dominated by right wing news sources. The Sioux City Journal has always been much farther to the right than the metro-Sioux City area. You can be in Orange City and pick up Rush/Sean/Anne and the other ghouls on 3, if not 4 radio stations with no liberal voices of reason to balance the insanity. There are a lot of good, hardworking people. The problem is they have been abandoned and have not had a champion to represent their voice since Berkley Bedell left office. Our Senator and Governor really represent Eastern and Central Iowa.

The best thing the IDP could do would be to buy a large watt radio station in Carroll and blanket all of western Iowa with a liberal radio alternative. It wouldnt make any money, but it would open up a lot of minds. Sounds like a great project for George Soros!

4. I like that radio station idea!!
That's exactly what they need!! Anybody know George Soros' phone number?

About NW IA. I was born and raised up there and my parents still live there. (I remember nearly getting pummeled by a group of jocks in Orange City because I was listening to the B-52's in their town :eyes: - devil music apparently). I'd like to think it's getting better with each new generation but I'm not so sure.

Back in the day, when my parents hosted a caucus - there would be just a handful of Democrats there. Apparently this year was one of the largest turnouts, so I suppose that is encouraging.
However, I think Sioux and Lyon counties still have the largest percentage of Repugs in the state.

12. Well radio stations were available and I tried to get folks interested
but nobody had any interest. LPFM may be coming soon. I will try to keep folks informed.

5. Was Counciltucky on the call?
Okay, okay, just kidding.

Now that the 'virtual fence' failed - is the Bush Government gonna re-visit King's electric fence idea?

13. lol...
I wouldn't want to be on a phone call with Steve King out of fear of ruining a perfectly good phone.

8. Oh Gosh King is just as much an idiot on conference calls
as he is at Lincoln-Reagan dinners on C-SPAN.

9. Even mores so.
I wish his simplistic & folksy manner of speaking was just an act. Sadly, I think that's the real Steve.

Simplistic...Simple...Simpleton.
