FOUR KILLED, 48 INJURED AS TORNADO STRIKES BOY SCOUT CAMP
(Turin, Iowa) -- What started as an evening of fun turned into one of horror at a boy scout camp in Western Iowa.
Four people were killed, 48 injured after a tornado struck the Little Sioux Boy Scout Ranch near Turin, Iowa late Wednesday evening. Of those injured, 42 are still hospitalized in Omaha, Sioux City, Council Bluffs, Onawa and Missouri Valley. Iowa Governor Chet Culver gave an update on the disaster early this morning. Culver expressed sadness over the loss of life, and paid tribute to the camp counselors who led camper to shelter--thus preventing further casualties...
Ninety-three campers and 25 staff members were at the camp for a youth conference when the tornado struck. Iowa Public Safety Commission Gene Meyer says National Guard troops were utilized in a search and rescue effort at the camp. Though all campers and a staffers are accounted for, Meyer says search operations will continue in daylight for anyone else who may have been in the camp at the time the storm hit.
Monona County Sheriff Jeffrey Pratt says the camp--and other parts of the county--sustained extensive damage.
The names of the dead have not yet been released, pending notification of kin.

Cliff Greedy is the hospital's director of social service utlization and emergency preparedness. Greedy tells KMA News the group was traveling back from Kansas City when they ran into severe weather--and decided to seek shelter at the hospital.

MORE SEVERE WEATHER STRIKES KMA LAND
(Shenandoah) -- Another night of severe weather across KMA Land.
Numerous tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings were issued across the listening as a strong line of storms made its way from Northwest Iowa, through the Omaha/Council Bluffs area to Southeast Nebraska and Northwest Missouri. No damage was reported in the immediate area--but the storms brought more rainfall to already swollen rivers and streams. Page County Emergency Management Coordinator Rod Riley told KMA News the Nishnabotna River was over its banks near Essex last night. Though no additional roads were flooded, Riley says some closings may be possible later today.
At least one confirmed tornado touched down near Louisville, Nebraska. Numerous flood warnings are in effect across the area, as well.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) _ A lightning strike has knocked out radar at the National Weather Service's Valley office.

MIDWEST RAINS PUSH CORN PRICES ABOVE $7 A BUSHEL
NEW YORK (AP) _ Corn prices on Wednesday surged above $7 a bushel for the first time, pushed higher by Midwest rains that have flooded fields and left farmers with the prospect of a significantly smaller crop.
Corn's jump -- its fifth record in as many days -- means more headaches for consumers, who can expect higher beef, pork and chicken prices as livestock owners are forced to thin their herds and flocks to cope with higher costs for corn-based animal feed.
Heavy rain and flooding in Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin and other Midwestern states have drenched corn fields and severely delayed spring planting. More bad weather is expected over the next several days, meaning farmers may have to abandon planting or shift the acres to soybeans, which have a later growing cycle.
Vic Lespinasse, with Grainanalyst.com, says if poor weather continues, corn prices could explode even higher.

REID SAYS PRIMARY CALENDAR 'FUNDAMENTALLY FLAWED'
WASHINGTON (AP) _ Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told a group of Michigan Democrats that the current primary system is ``fundamentally flawed'' and he supports changing the 2012 primary calendar to reduce the influence of early contests in Iowa and New Hampshire.
Reid, a Democrat from Nevada, made the remarks last Sunday at a private fundraiser in Oakland County, Michigan, for Senator Carl Levin, a Democrat from Michigan.
According to three people in attendance, Reid credited Levin and other Michigan Democrats for challenging the primary calendar and says he will work with them to seek improvements while maintaining Nevada's role in the process.
Reid told the group of about 50 Democrats in Farmington Hills, Michigan, that Iowa and New Hampshire were unrepresentative of the rest of the nation
