UI Professor Arthur Miller, who was accused of offering good grades to females in exchange for sexual favors, committed suicide a week ago, and his body was discovered Sunday and verified via dental records today.
Say what you want about the man, but I was a student of his, so I knew him. He was a really nice guy -- quirky and odd, no doubt, but friendly, jovial, and willing to help. His demise is very much unfortunate -- a brilliant mind has been silenced.
I'm not defending his actions at all, by the way. When I first heard the accusations, my first assumption was that he did it, and the evidence (as well as others having come out to say the same) seems to back that up. However, it is still sad that this all went down. He didn't deserve this sort of demise, whatever happened in his head. He undoubtedly deserved punishment if he would have been convicted. That said, this end is unfortunate for all. A wife is now widowed, two children are without a daddy, and the world has one less scholarly mind.
RIP Prof. Miller. Thank you for your contribution, no matter how small, to my life and the life of many others.

1. Your words are very kind |

I did not know him other than from NPR, a few caucus related news items, and of course the recent news. We shall never know the truth, but may he - and more importantly his family - find peace.

2. I was really hoping he had just run away |

It's unfortunate that he chose this path. I really don't think he would have spent any time in prison, even if he was guilty. Surely some kind of deal would have been made to keep him with his young family.
