I do not understand registered Democrats who say they are voting for McCain. Today we had to door knock in our precinct and all of our volunteers were suddenly not able to show up. So just DH and I stomped the area. We were so surprised that there were a few people who are registered Dems and on our list as GOTV but they told us they were voting for McCain. After a bit of talking, one of the three changed her mind but the other two said they were still leaning toward McCain.

I have such a hard time wrapping my brain around that. I just don't get the appeal.

1. Cnavassing today

I went out for Obama in a working class area of NW Des Moines today.

Just some musings...

I actually had an 81 year old woman tell me that his race was an issue for her. At least she was honest with me...

A very unscientific survey: if they are middle-aged white working class guys with trucks, they are going for McCain. What is it with these guys anyway?

Then, driving through a more upscale neighborhood, I saw a lot more Obama signs...A class divide?

3. I deal with a lot of truckdrivers from Kentucky.

The ones I have talked about politics with, do not like Bush. And I've had a couple of leaners for Obama. I've only had one who was for McCain. We had a great discussion. I try to find common ground with them. Once you get them to agree about something, like heathcare, it's easier to take the conversation to the next level. Even he agreed to take a second look at Obama's policies.
These are all really nice guys that I see a couple of times a week.

4. Here in Davenport, there are Obama signs all over my neighborhood

and it is a long way from "upscale". In fact, the Hispanics next door are some of the hardest working Harkin volunteers around, and they not only drive trucks, they work on them as well. The woman across the street was a staunch Hillary supporter who didn't take her sign down until about three weeks ago and replaced it with an Obama sign.
In Northeast Davenport, where the money is in this city, there are some McCain signs, but there are also a lot of Democratic candidate's signs. Not so many Obama signs, but Democratic candidates signs. Like Braley for instance. So it seems that Des Moines and Davenport are different, as usual. Of course, we do border Illinois on the beautiful Mississippi River. So that may have something to do with it.

2. Three different houses we stopped at today the husbands came to the door

and told us that their wives (who we had marked as Obama supporters) were now going to vote for McCain.

Wonder if Mr. Debi would get away with that....x(

5. Yeah, it's frustrating.

My very first house today had 3 Dem signs in the front yard for local and state seats, but they wouldn't vote for Obama. In fact they were pretty nasty about it.

But on the plus side, out of 115 doors today, only two were like that. :thumbsup:

6. Yes, progressoid. That is exactly what I'm talking about.

By the end of the day yesterday we canvased about 200 but about 5 were democrats and said they wouldn't vote for Obama. Two said they were voting McCain. The other three said they were not going to vote for president just the local and congressional candidates.

7. I mostly got enthusiatic Obama voters on the phone. They were extremely excited to vote.

Not many people home when I knocked doors in a small neighbor yesterday -- except a senior who slammed the door in my face. She was marked "persuadable". I don't know why a senior would want to vote for McCain -- he is sure to screw social security and medicare up.
