If you don't mind indulging me a little bit |
|
Here's a letter to the editor I wrote that was published in today's Waterloo Courier. I was trying to make the point that what progressives believe is not outlandish or so very far from what non-progressives believe. Dunno if that got across, doubt I swayed anybody's opinion the least little bit - but it never hurts to try, right?
I believe in an America where each citizen has equal rights and standing before the law.
I believe all our children deserve a decent education, safety, and freedom from want.
I believe we must keep our promises to our veterans, and make every effort not to make more veterans.
I believe we all benefit from many public programs. I believe taxes are the rent we pay to live in a civilized society.
I believe my faith gives me important guidelines for living my life. I believe I have no right to force those guidelines on you, nor you to force yours on me.
I believe in an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay, and vice versa.
I believe the interests of corporations are usually vastly different from those of ordinary working people. I believe legislators who look out for ordinary citizens’ interests serve us best, for the corporations surely can and do look out for themselves.
I believe the many groups who make up this great country improve and enrich it - our diversity truly is our strength.
I believe in progress and moving the country forward, not in holding on to some past that never really was.

2. I would probably have added taht |

no person should ever be denied needed health services for lack of money, nor go bankrupt due to illness.
I think healthcare will backfire on repubs and maybe medicare for all may be a reality.

3. Two hundred words ain't all that much |
|
and I was trying to get as many heads nodding yes as I could.
I hope you are right about health care backfiring on the Rethugs. I wish there were more provisions going into effect quickly. Or that the DNC or MoveOn or whoever would run ads highlighting the provisions that have gone into effect. Personally, I am SO glad to be able to have my 20 year old daughter insured again - I can't imagine even a Tea Partier parent wanting to go back to kicking your kids off at 18 or whenever.

4. yeah - I ghosted several LTTEs this year |

with any luck you can get a coherent thought in that limit. Really a good job. I am already sick of repugs saying health care was a central issue. It wasn't. And I hope the backlash is huge. And I hope DUers do some organizing on this before the echo chamber becomes too loud.
