Local donations for Katrina victims? |
|
Does anyone know if any Lawrence churches are doing clothing drives for victims of the Hurricane? I read in the paper this morning about a water drive and that people were calling the local Red Cross with the same types of questions, but the only answer given was the RC doesn't have the manpower to take donations. I don't have alot of money to give, but I do have clean clothes that someone could benefit from.

an organization started in Lawrence by Tom Van Holt, a survivor of the tsunami, called me this morning about Katrina. They are meeting tomorrow afternoon and will be sending people down there. They will issue a press release within the next 24.

I attended the meeting but had to leave early (I've got family in town). They were still discussing what can be done in the both the short and long term that would be most beneficial. One of the short-term things they were talking about were kits containing items for individuals. There was talk about specialized kits with medical supplies for specific needs, i.e., diabetic kits. They were still talking when I had to leave - had to take care of a ten year old.
I did pass Tom's phone number onto MuseRider so that if she hears anything about the contingency plans coming to fruitation local she can contact/update him directly. Also, she mentioned some really good ideas for items to be included in care package/kits like stamped stationary items, phone cards, and coloring books for children.
