WASHINGTON — The senator to see Thursday in the wake of Harriet Miers’ withdrawal as a Supreme Court nominee?
Judging by the voice on the radio and the face on the television screen, that was U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas.
All day long Thursday, Brownback was in demand: CNN. National Public Radio. Fox News. PBS. Newspapers. They all wanted his post-debacle analysis.
Brownback’s early reluctance to endorse Miers is what earned him all the attention. That initial stand by Brownback, one of the GOP’s leading social conservatives, helped ignite the fury on the right that ultimately contributed to Miers’ downfall.
