"I'm ready to pronounce Ryun seriously in trouble," said David Rohde, a political scientist at Duke University who watches congressional politics.
Rohde said the Bush "rescue mission" indicates how close a once-safe race for the GOP has become in the 2nd District of eastern Kansas.
...
Key to the race will be voter turnout. Washburn University political science professor Bob Beatty said 2nd District voters, living in 23 counties in eastern Kansas, didn't exactly bust down the doors recently to cast their ballots.
"The 2nd District featured the county (Cherokee) with the most pathetic primary turnout in the state on one hand, but on the other hand Boyda has been working those rural counties hard," Beatty said. "It might not be the turnout, per se, that determines the race, but who turns out."
