Who knows? Maybe Jim Bunning will make the cut in another hall of fame. He already has a well-earned place in baseball's glory gallery. More recent events have qualified him for a special place in the history of the U.S. Senate.
Pennsylvania's Arlen Specter said, after a recent hardball Medicare floor debate in which GOP leader Mitch McConnell again was able to block legislative progress, "That display last night on the floor is something I've never seen."
He was talking about a confrontation between West Virginia's much-venerated Robert Byrd, and Kentucky's Big Jim.
"Regular order!" demanded the Old Beanballer. "Who said that?" asked Mr. Byrd, the Senate's longest-serving member and most expert parliamentarian.
"I did," replied Mr. Bunning. "Who are you?" asked Mr. Byrd. "I'm a senator," Mr. Bunning huffed. "You're a great baseball man," Mr. Byrd answered. "I'm a senator; I have the same rights as you," the Big Righthander insisted. "Yeah, man, you're a senator," Mr. Byrd agreed, laughing heartily.
