As 2010 came to a close, Gov. Steve Beshear was calling for a political truce that would put aside the 2011 gubernatorial race until after the Kentucky General Assembly, which convenes Tuesday, adjourns.
But by the time Beshear made the call, the race already was in full swing.
Beshear, a Democrat, has been raising money for the governor's race since the summer of 2009. And a recent state audit that found wasteful spending by the Medicaid managed-care provider Passport has given him and Republican Senate President David Williams an opening to criticize each other.
Phil Moffett, another Republican seeking the GOP nomination, and Gatewood Galbraith, an independent, don't figure into this particular battle since they aren't in the legislature and don't have nearly the opportunity to play session politics as do Beshear and Williams.
