MANCHESTER, Ky. (AP) -- A federal grand jury has indicted a former Clay County clerk for his alleged involvement in a drug ring during his time in office.
Jennings B. White, who served two terms as Clay County clerk, has been charged with taking part in a drug ring that allegedly sold cocaine and marijuana to drug dealers in Kentucky and elsewhere.

In the May 2002 Republican primary, politically motivated shootings plagued the election.
When White was running for re-election, his van was riddled with 33 bullets, and the eventual winner of the race, Fred Thompson, had a bullet fired into his kitchen. A private investigator hired to investigate White's past was shot after delivering documents showing that White had been charged with assault and battery with intent to rape in 1968. The charges were later dismissed.
