My son is leaving for Louisiana with 300 generators

and pumps. He has no plans once he gets there.

hook up w. county officials and take their advice as to where it is most needed.

I don't know where your son is but he might want to wait a little while. The worst of the storm is still over the area and he doesn't want to get caught in it.

and then turn around and head south, won't be there for 20 hrs. I guess.

7. If his intentions are to sell them

please have him verify what pricing ranges FEMA allows. I have a friend in Florida that nearly went to jail by taking BIDS on generators that were too high. Also tell him thanks for the concern.

8. The police will prob. be on the lookout for people "gouging" residents.

He could get hassled by them. In Florida we get a bunch of con artists trying to sell generators that don't always even work at outrageous prices. The cops really try to crack down on them. In addition they are also on the look out for looters. If I were him, I would try to contact a "liberal" church or one that is in a "poor" area because the city is arranged by parishes and a huge number of people are catholic.

I don't know if he's giving them away for free - but they really throw the book at people who sell hurricane-related materials for more money that they are worth. I'm sure your son isn't doing that - but he should be aware that there could be a lot of suspicion directed towards him. He should not put out a sign saying that he has generators but do it quietly.

They're not letting people back into their homes yet - but by the time he gets there they may be letting people in. They ordinarily only let people into the area who live there and they will check to see if he is a resident. He might have to work through the red cross or some other organization to get them out to people.

On the good side, people there are seem to be pretty united for the most part - there is not the same amount of fear and hatred between black and white and rich and poor that you find in other areas. They pretty much all live together.

9. He's going there to help with a friend

He can weld and knows quite a bit about commerical construction, not making the trip to make money on generators.

10. Sounds like a good guy - might be a good idea to contact FEMA

and ask where to go with the generators.

For one thing, FEMA pays for generators in these cases. They might be awfully glad to see him, because I'll bet the entire area is sold out of generators.

I know about FEMA cause they paid for mine, in between Francis and Jeanne.

Or if he goes to a Lowe's or Home Depot they might buy them from him
immediately.

They need food and water desperately too. Wonder if he could pick up any of that?

Anyway, tell him I think what he's doing is pretty wonderful, and to be careful on the road.

11. He Should Carry Receipts

And sell them at cost (if he isn't doing it to make money and was going there anyway).

He could sell them to churches & community centers in poor neighborhoods.

to go. I wish him the best. I have people I love over there and I can't reach them in this dire situation.
