I am thinking of moving to New Orleans

I have been looking at jobs down there in my field and looks promising. But what about housing for me and a puppy? Any ideas where to look?

1. Rentals have been expensive but..

prices are coming down. If you are willing to pay a pet deposit, you shouldn't have issues finding a rental, even if it isn't listed as pet friendly. If you come to town, you may want to just drive around and look for "For Rent" signs. I recommend looking in Broadmoor, Uptown, and Carrolton. Craigslist has tons of listings, which shows that the are plenty of rentals available. I think you may even have some negotiating power, because some of these rentals have been listed for some time. See if the landlord will come down $50-$100/month. Good luck!

2. For your pup

You might be interested to know that the levee along the river (near the areas the PP mentioned) is used as a de facto off-leash area. (And, you'd be near me and Mr. Laurel, with our two dogs.) There's also a dog park near the French Quarter.

Also, read the Times-Picayune for an idea of what's happening (e.g., crime) in different neighborhoods. For instance, yesterday's paper noted that the region of the NO metro area that includes North Shore and Metairie is one of the most conservative in the country.

3. Metairie's not so bad

It's close to the city, and has better infrastructure, and less crime. If you have to be politically sympatico with your neighbors, try uptown, or Lakeview if you can afford it.

Disgusting. I grew up in River Ridge. To show you how times have changed, I can recall in high school that our representative in Congress was Lindy Boggs. She was a Democrat and a class act. I believe the districts have been redrawn since then; the East Bank of Jefferson Parish shared its Congressional District boundaries with New Orleans back then.

4. uptown

Uptown around Magazine street is very liberal friendly. The city as a whole is an island in more ways than one in this area.

Hopefully the local politics wont follow the rest of the state. I hope :)

5. Another vote for Uptown....

It's a very nice area that wasn't hit too badly by the big K... The Marigny district is also nice, if you'd rather be closer to the French Quarter and have some extra money to burn.

6. dog area

good place to walk dogs is by the giraffe pen in audubon park. My dog loves it there. Easy parking. and u can see the giraffes without payin to go into the zoo. Never more than five or six people around there too for some reason

My landlord is very laid back. good area. wont break the bank either. Walkable to most everything.

12. +1 vote for Lakeview

I live in Lakeview and am very happy here. It's not nearly as expensive as Uptown and there's pretty much zero crime. This area was hit pretty hard by Katrina but it's coming back in full force. There aren't a lot of rentals in the area but if you're looking to buy it's a great option. As the area gets more and more rebuilt the property values are going to go up and it could be a good investment for you. Before the storm is was one of the wealthier parts of the city. City Park is way less crowded than Audubon Park and is great for dogs. It's a beautiful park and it's only going to get better because they are pumping a lot of money into it. There is a very nice dog park that is going to be opening in City Park soon. You can google Nola City Bark for more info on that.

If you don't mind getting your hands dirty there are plenty of gutted homes in Lakeview that you can purchase for a song and renovate to your heart's desire. There are also many homes that have already been renovated.
