New voter registration numbers?

I cannot seem to find (online) how many new registered voters Louisiana has. Does anyone have this information?

Already, more people are registered to vote in Louisiana -- nearly $2.87 million -- than at any time in state history.

I wonder why they put a dollar sign in front of the number of voters?

I sure it's been out there, but I did not know it. In Lafayette, I sometimes fail to read the local paper thoroughly, so I must have missed it.
