Can someone tell me about Kip Holden? |
|
Have only heard a little about him...is he a true Progressive Democrat? Could he be a "rising star" in LA politics?

Very liberal voting record as a state senator, although he will occasionally skew toward making it easier for businesses to get started. One example is that he sponsored legislation to keep the state from retaliating against local governments that give tax breaks like Livingston Parish gave to attract the Bass Pro Shop.
The unfortunate thing is there's not a lot a liberal can do as mayor to make changes. You can change the way the city does its business and make that more fair. You can address police racism and corruption (which isn't as bad here in Baton Rouge as it could be).
The major thing I think Holden needs to work on is to insist on a more equitable property tax assessment on homes. The assessments of the worth of homes has been nearly arbitrary but has tended to favor the very rich. So the city loses money that could go to its schools.

Small business creates good jobs. Republicans hate that, remember?
