You know you're from Maine when.... (x-posted from Lounge)
These are from a Facebook group I'm in. I thought they were wicked funny, not to mention true!

You know what an Irving is and the location of 15 of them.

At least once in your life you've said, "It smells like the mill in here."

You crave Italian sandwiches at least weekly.

You use "wicked" as a multipurpose part of speech.

You take the New Hampshire toll personally.

The area around your back door is referred to as "the dooryard".

You never say what you paid for an item but how much you "gave" for it.

You've had a vacation from school just to help the family pick potatoes.

You know a lobster pot is a trap, not a kettle.

The basement is refered to as "Downcellah."

You eat supper at night and dinner at noon.

L.L. Bean's not just a store, it's a way of life.

"The City" means exclusively Portland.

It's not a storm - it's a "Nor'eastah".

You leave your keys in your car and the next morning your car is still there.

You leave your car running while you run into a store.

You know what Uncle Henry's is.

You have been in more than one Polar Bear Swim/Lobster Dip or have witnessed someone doing so.

You use the phrase "You can't get there from here."

You use the term "The County" to refer to Aroostook County.

You know that Reny's is a Maine Adventcha.

You know who and what a "Masshole" is.

You hit either the Fryeburg or Cumberland Fairs about every year.

You went to "The Prom," and not just when you were in high school.

You know what Amato's is.

All year long you're tracking sand in the house--from the beach in the summer and the roads and sidewalks in the winter.

You've had arguments over the comparative quality of fried dough.

You call four inches of snow "a dusting."

You've hung out at a gravel pit.

You think a mosquito could be a species of bird.

You once skipped school and went to Bar Harbor, Old Orchard Beach, or Reid State Park.

Even your school cafeteria made good chowdah.

You've gone to a Grange bean supper.

Levinskies has the best deals on "Sweatahs."

Bob Marley is a comedian, not a singer.

Canada is a day trip.

You know that the accent is really a perverted Boston accent.

You like seafood (lobster,crab,shrimp etc.)

You understand the theory behind Dimillo's floating restaurant.

You eat a Jordan's red hot dog with Humpty Dumpty potato chips.

Your aunt, grandmother, cousins, second cousins, fifth uncle, etc. all live within 10 miles of you.

You know that the Maine Turnpike is for the tourists; real Mainers take the back roads.

You've heard of a Maine Coon Cat.

You've come to accept the French Canadians and their man bikinis.

You know what OOB is and love Bill's Pizza.

SD Warren is a favorite cologne of yours.

"So Po" is an appropriate term to refer to the city across the bridge.

You've gone into One City Center to ride the great glass elevator.

You know the "Counties of our State" song.

Rick Cherett was the icon of your childhood.

The time and temperature number is locked in your memory.

Throughout your young years you've planned on going way out of state for college.

You think of neighborhoods in terms of elementary schools.

You own a camp or rent one within an hour from your home.

Any others to add?

2. That IS wicked funny ...and very true
Isn't the time number 775-4321? It used to be when I was a kid.

I STILL go through "There's 16 counties in our state..." on occasion.

I remember skipping classes in Orono to go to Sand Beach in Acadia. The only time I skipped school evah. :)

And Irving does have clean washrooms.

6. Skipping class to go Sand Beach is a time honored UMO tradition
I remember one particularly balmy April morning, me and the boys had just sat down for our morning coffee at the Union.

We just looked at each other and without saying a word, jumped up, RAN to "The Car" and took off.

I think half the campus was down there that day...

:)

You know Demillo's is not pronounced 'Deem-I-llos'.
The twin cities is not Minneapolis-Saint Paul.
You know where and what the famous signpost is.
Your garage is not for the car, but for the explosion of rusty coleman products and a dented canoe.
You instinctively know where the Volvo-line is, and when you've crossed it.
You can pronounce 'Piscataquis'.

OF COURSE ENGINEERING IS A STEP OR TWO ABOVE LIBERAL ARTS.

26. No... I don't know what "they" say about UM.
UM is not the same university it was back in 1936. I wouldn't make assumptions about what the school is like now based on the experiences of a 1936 graduate. That was over seventy years ago! My husband and I both graduated from the engineering program (a little bit more recently than 1936). My brother will be graduating in May from UM with a degree in secondary education. There's a lot of smart kids that go to school there and the professors seem to always be around to help. The school has even changed a lot since I went there. It seems to me it just keeps getting better there.

31. Mainer in Exile
I've lived in Florida for the past three years, before that, I spent 43 years in best state in the US of A, the State of Maine.

1.) I have 3 cases of Moxie I bought at the S&S. I'm not touching a can, it just makes me feel good that it's there.

2.) I get up early two days a year just to see frost on my car windshield at 6:30 AM. It's gone by 7:00 AM but by gawd winter is winter. Just for kicks I'll put on my 7" Bean boots and celebrate the wicked cold! (Note to self, put on sunscreen by 10:00 AM. It's gonna get hot.)

3.) It's tough living here Florida, I can't complain about the cold because everyone knows I'm from Maine. Conversely it's zero class to move to Florida and complain about the heat.

4.) There are three professional football teams in Florida, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Miami Dolphins, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Whats up with that???? Shouldn't one be enough? Image the Vezie Vagabonds, The Limestone Losers and the Rangeley Ragamuffins?

Great thread!

32. Welcome to DU!
I got my sister a "Mainer in Exile" sticker for her car. She's in FL, too. She still, on occasion, says Day-ton-er and cah but she's becoming assimilated. Sad. ;)

I went to a hockey game in W Palm one time. It was the strangest feeling in the world to go to a hockey game in shorts and shirtsleeves.

Welcome to the DU.

You interpreted what I wrote in the wrong way. I said, "You (Mainers) don't consider hanging clothes outside to dry on a clothes line low class". The key word there is don't. I am a Mainer, and I know I don't think anyone that hangs clothes outside to dry is low class. Do you? Most Mainers I have met don't seem to have problem with this sort of thing. I lived in Florida for a short time, and down there people think you are low class if you hang your clothes outside on a line to dry. I find a lot of Floridians to be superficial sort of people. You should read my comments as "Mainers are not superficial people".

On edit, I would also like clarify that I am legitimate Mainer too, not a transplant. I was born and raised in this state. I lived in Florida for about 3 years after college, but I moved back because I love living in Maine, and I wouldn't feel at home any place else. I plan on living here until the day I die.

As a Maine man, you're not sure why people from elsewhere always seem amused when you say you're going to put on your stockings.

But by the same token, they don't understand why you think "Filene's Basement" is a funny name for a store.

Not sure who this guy is, but Rick Charette did some kid songs in the late 80's/90's. I think we even had a casette of his stuff. My taste in local music was more in the line of Bill Chinook (RIP).

I love Maine! And Rick Cherett (sp?) was a fixture of my childhood too because he played every year at the campgrounds we go to.

I didn't realize 'Wicked' was a Maine thing too, I thought it was just Boston area.

My Dad loved Moxie and my sister loves it. I'll refrain from sharing my opinion of that concoction. ;)
