I caught a piece on the news couple days ago where some equipment owners were talking about shutting their rigs down because of fuel prices. I'M retired and have all kinds of time to enjoy the outdoors. But have limited my hunting to 5 miles from home. normally I would spend several days in philips, lincoln, howland, princeton etc. this means at least a $1000 dollars not spent for food ,lodging and fuel. I think the only thing that will drop oil prices is businesses standing up to the oil companies. And by us the people slowing down our spending we can force this action. turn your thermostat down a couple of deg. ; cut your trips to the store, idle time use your scrapper. car pool with a neighbor. But most of all when you vote remember if it comes from texas its bought and paid for by big oil!

1. We just installed a wood stove... |
|
This is definitely helping us this winter...we still need to use K1 (at $3.50 a gallon) somewhat because our water pipes under the house are warmed by the Heating lines, but we're 're-plumbing' next year so that we can get by with maybe 100 gallons a year of K1 (only on seriously sub-zero days, or if we want to leave town for a couple of days).
I was having a discussion with friends this weekend. How are folks going to be able to afford to live up here in Maine anymore? The standard of living isn't too high (quality of life was always the offset of that). But when you're paying $1000 for 300 gallons which a lot of people use every month or so, I don't understand how people will be able to remain up here...
Scary times in the Northeast (15 degrees in Liberty Maine this morning...People are cranking on the oil already).

|
my friend has a dual furnace.one side wood the other oil. he uses the oil for back up when they go out of town or to busy to feed the wood stove. its tied into a hot water heating system. my son had electric heat in his house,he put in a monitor oil furnace and he has a wood stove in the basement family room. the electric is back up now and he cut his heating bill big time.
