March 26): Knox County's jobless rate tied an 18-year high in February when unemployment jumped to 9.9 percent.
The last time the jobless rate was this high was in February 1991 when it was also 9.9 percent. The last time the jobless rate was higher for the region was in March 1983 when it reached 13.9 percent.
“Labor market conditions continued to weaken nationally and in Maine between January and February as the number of nonfarm jobs declined and the unemployment rate rose,” said Maine Department of Labor Commissioner Laura Fortman.
First District Congresswoman Chellie Pingree of North Haven issued a statement on the jobs report issued Thursday by the state. The Maine seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate in February was 9.1 percent.
