How does a constitutional amendment via ballot works in Maine? |
I'm wondering with the potential passage of equal marriage rights in Maine? How would voters amend it if they so wished??

1. With the required number of petition signatures they can force a referendum |
It's assumed this will be on the ballot in November. And it will be a "Do you favor repeal of..." question.

2. That's not an amendment though |
It doesn't change the Constitution, it just vetoes the particular bill.
Which the legislature can pass again, if they so choose.

4. Constitutional amendments |
Amendments can only be proposed by the legislature in Maine. They then go to popular vote for approval or rejection. Unlike laws, amendments cannot be placed on the ballot by direct petition.
