Challenge to Maine gay marriage law filed (Portland Press Herald)
AUGUSTA -- Maine election officials say a formal challenge is being filed to the same-sex marriage law.

Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap said today opponents filed a challenge under Maine's people's veto provision Wednesday, the same day Gov. John Baldacci signed the gay marriage bill. Dunlap says the challengers have been asked to complete their application.

Petitions seeking repeal of the law will then be printed so opponents can begin collecting voters' signatures. They must collect signatures amounting to at least 10 percent of those who voted in the last gubernatorial election in order to force a people's veto referendum in November. The signature deadline will likely fall in mid-September.

1. We all knew they were rearing to go.
the big question is how long will it take them to get to 55,000 signatures?

Subject: Thank you for making marriage equality a reality in Maine

Senator Jonathan Courtney
The Maine Senate
3 State House Station
Augusta, ME 04333-0001

Dear Senator Courtney,

I am your constituent and I want to THANK YOU for making
marriage for same-sex couples a reality in Maine.

This was an important step in the struggle to ensure basic human
rights and dignity for all people in our great state and our
country. You should be very proud that you took this stand for
what is right and not what was easy or politically beneficial.

Sincerely,

What a world we live in.
