Another Democrat enters the Governor's race...
Patrick K. McGowan plans to formally announce his candidacy for Maine governor Tuesday in a series of news conferences across the state.
McGowan, a Democrat, resigned as commissioner of the Department of Conservation to launch the campaign. Earlier today, Gov. John Baldacci swore in McGowan’s deputy commissioner, Elizabeth Townsend, as the acting commissioner.
McGowan became the conservation commissioner in 2003 and was one of the Baldacci’s original Cabinet members. He has been involved in numerous land use and conservation agreements, including management of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway and the addition of Katahdin Lake to Baxter State Park.
McGowan also is a former state legislator and was head of the Boston regional office of the Small Business Administration during the Clinton administration. He ran for Congress in 1990 and 1992, losing both times to Republican Olympia Snowe.
