In the Democratic primary, between candidates Ben Cardin and Kwesi Mfume, whom would you vote for?

1. Kwesi's my choice. That would shake up "the millionaires club."

He's a bright guy who has fought the good fight. He never compromised on the key issues and he's got a thick skin.

He's probably as bright as Sarbanes, which is saying a great deal, and he's "telegenic."

I'm in VA right next to "The Free State." In fact, I drove through there twice in 20 hours in a trip to Philly (great place, wild and crazy people).

7. I no longer live in MD

but I campaigned against the current MD Repub governor in 2002 so I have a real interest in this race. I like Mfume (I'm on his email list), but the latest poll shows Mfume would lose to the Republican African-American Steele, while Cardin would defeat Steele. For that reason, I would vote for Cardin if I still lived in Maryland. I thought that Steele would probably defeat Mfume even before I saw the poll, and I would not be willing to take that chance

10. I moved to Scotts Valley CA (about 6 miles from Santa Cruz)

to be near family. The weather was great here today! So is the fact that the Gropinator keeps making mistakes that may defeat him in the next election!

I can't believe that the 3 blue states I have lived in (MA, MD, and CA) all have real jerks (R) for governor!

12. My brain says to vote for Cardn, but in my heart I want Mfume

so I didn't vote at all.

If Mfume's polling against Steele goes up, he's got my vote. He's got it all for the Senate. A good voice, telegenic, smart as a whip. Great creds in politics and as head of the NAACP ... to say nothing of having his own teevee talk show for a while (all political stuff .... no kids who screw sisters kinda shit).

This guy would have a national audience in a heartbeat if he were a Dem senator.

But alas, it appears it will be Cardin ... who is okay, too .... but sorta like an accounatnt type compared to a rock star.

but I did vote for Mfume. Stubborn, I guess. Hate to give the potential up before the race has even begun, but Mfume does not seem to be doing anything much to get himself out of the hole. Cardin is a good guy, I will have no problem with him at all. Mfume would just be better, if he can unload the baggage.

it is very likely that both O'Malley and Duncan will tap African American running mates.

They are fighting over Glen Ivey. O'Malley will likely win that battle. Duncan could end up with Joan Pratt.

I like his politics, his story, and him. I interned for Mfume way back in 1990, and have immense respect for him. This is also a great opportunity to send a progressive Black Democrat to the Senate.

I like Cardin also, and will certainly work for him if becomes the nominee, but it is Mfume for now. I also get a bad feeling about a Cardin v. Steele race.

23. It's about time there was more than one African-American senator.

So, far, only Illinois has elected African-American senators (Mosely Braun and Obama).

I would dearly love for Maryland to be the next state to have an African-American senator, but only if that senator is a Democrat. It would be a travesty if Steele won the senate seat. He is nothing more than an empty suit -- a puppet for the GOP leadership.

Although I've long admired Mfume's leadership of the NAACP, I don't know how good he is as a political candidate. He is certainly a very intelligent man, but I wonder whether he has the charisma of, say, Obama, which will be needed to connect with the voters in the more rural areas.

Plus, I imagine the fact that Mfume has a number of out-of-wedlock children might be an issue with some of these voters.

Are there any other prominent African-American who might still throw their hats into the ring? For example, what's Kurt Schmoke doing these days?

for another candidate. I imagine the current candidates have done quite a bit of fundraising.

If I were you, I'd go w/ Ben Cardin. A loss in very blue Maryland is not what we need.

Definately Cardin. Steele won't be easy to beat. But Cardin is a good choice. Mfume's campaign really never got off to a good start, and I seriously doubt that he'll win the primary.

The important thing is an immediate and full endorsement from the loser of the primary (this goes for the Governor's election too). Maryland's primaries are really close to the general election. If Democrats spend the first two weeks of a 8 week campaign bickering among themselves, hello to two-term Gov. Ehrlich and at least six years of Sen. Steele.

Cardin won't do a darn thing about the electronic voting machines. That is a problem.

I don't LIKE the choices. And then go up against Steele who is being cherry picked by the Bush crime family and Karl Rove?

Between electronic voting machines and the "Rove" support factor something really amazing better happen or we can all look forward to Steele being our senator as the Republican noise machine tries to say MD is going Republican.

We are in big trouble people.

will clean Steele's clock. He does extremely well in areas where Ehrlich is popular and is still very appealing to liberal Democrats. There may be some other choices, but they are more of the conservative Dem types.

Mikulski gets 60%-72% and Sarbanes gets 58%-64%. I don't want this to be close. I want a clean win for the Democratic candidate.

I like both Cardin and Kweisi, for different reasons. Unfortunately, Kweisi has too much baggage from his stint as head of the NAACP and being involved in some scandal about giving a girlfriend a job there. The Repub Smear Machine will go to town with that one!

Unfortunately, they're gonna run Steele the Oreo to make it look like they understand black people. Frankly, if any black person other than Steele votes Repub after what's happening in New Orleans, they deserve what they get!
