Looking for recommendations on a vet for the dogs

We've got three dogs and I need to schedule a visit for one of them. Rather than to just pick one out of the phone book I'd like to get a recommendation from the locals. We're in Rockville but I'm willing to drive almost any distance for a good vet. We've got two small dogs and German Shepherd. One of the small ones has developed a bladder infection and we'd like to get her in as soon as possible.

She told me to feed my kitties yogurt when they were having bladder problems a few years ago. They love the stuff, and no problems since then. I give them a couple of tablespoons of plain yogurt once or twice a week. Much cheaper than antibiotics.

If for some reason you don't click with her, try PetVacx in Rockville. I took my dog there for years. They are across the street from the county animal shelter. They also do boarding.

This is what I was looking for. My lhasa was diagnosed with having some sort of bacterial bladder imbalance in her system right before we left. Her usual vet was gone and the vet we saw the day before we left only gave her a week's worth of antibiotics and that apparently wasn't enough. In the past week she's having to go outside almost constantly to relieve herself. This morning we woke up to find a couple of puddles in the bathroom. I need to get her some relief and save myself some cleaning.

up near Poolesville, 18620 Darnestown Rd. , Beallsville, MD 301-972-7010. Excellent care and they have a boarding kennel right behind them. Even if you don't use them for a vet, I recommend Woodhaven Kennel. 301-972-8327

We had to leave our dear ol' boy with them when he still had stitches on his back leg from an emergency. I wouldn't have dared with any other kennel but I knew they'd do a great job and they did. No infection, no swelling, healed beautifully!

It's always nice to have a back-up. I let the dogs decide. If they are comfortable with a vet than I stick with them. When I first moved in with my husband he had a Pyr who was a fear biter. I took her to her regular vet a number of times and she didn't like it. Whenever I took her in she would start panting heavily, she would try to hide or would make breaks for the door.

I finally took her to the one I had been using for my two dogs and it was like she was a totally different dog. I had warned my vet that the Pyr was a fear biter when I made the appointment but when I took her in he had no problem with her. He came out, approached her slowly and talked to her. After a few minutes she willingly followed him into the exam room and never once tried to bite him, me or anyone else at the clinic. At the other place I had been taking her I'd have to half drag her into the exam room. This time I followed her in to the exam room. When I took her back for the follow-up visit I had no problem getting her out of the car and up to the door. At the other place, she would refuse to get out of the car and would often try to hide on floor in the backseat.

So, I leave it up to the dogs to make the final decision on who their vet(s) are. If they like someone and respond positively to the vet, the staff and the environment then that's the place I'll take them to.

PetVacx is proving to be pretty expensive. I've got my lhasa on the Science Diet food they recommended and she's doing better. The stones are getting smaller but she still has them. PetVacx says they could do surgery but it will cost between $1200 and $1500. :wow: When she had the same surgery before (back in Kansas) it was just over $300. Granted, she had surgery 8 years ago. I expected surgery would cost more these days but I didn't expect it to cost between $900 to $1200 more.
