Progressive Talk Radio AM-1260 DC to change formats the week of 2/9/09.
Thanks Danny-boy!

:grr:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/02/01/AR2009020101836_2.html

President Obama may be riding high in Washington, but OBAMA 1260 is not.

The area's only progressive talk station is changing formats, dropping such syndicated liberal hosts as Ed Schultz, Stephanie Miller and Bill Press in favor of financial news, starting next week.

The move by Redskins owner Dan Snyder, who purchased the station, WWRC, and others in Washington last summer, leaves the city without a liberal radio outlet. Program Director Greg Tantum says he thought the station could work because of enthusiasm over Obama, but that ratings collapsed to a level that could not be measured after the election.

But ratings nearly doubled, he says, at Snyder's conservative station, WTNT, which features Laura Ingraham and Bill Bennett. Tantum said he will move Schultz to WTNT to give him another shot.

..snip

Those are Howie Kurtz's comments.

1. Maybe if they had more than a 500 watt college dorm room operation ......
We had a stronger radio station when I was a kid screwing around with science projects.

2. They got rid of Lionel
Edited on Wed Feb-04-09 05:44 PM by LiberalEsto
and my ears thank them. That guy's voice was like fingernails on a chalkboard.

Now they've got some guy named Clark Howard in the 4 pm slot with a show about managing your money. I'm not impressed.

I wish they'd bring Thom Hartmann back to the 4 pm time slot. I can't believe they're getting rid of Stephanie and Ed.

3. I heard that this afternoon.
I am actually able to get a station in buffalo, ny AM-1520 in the evenings when I leave work 5-530 and have been listening to Randi Rhodes on the ride home. I'm in HoCo. Bill, Stephanie and Ed were on today. Lionel was just ****ing annoying. Good riddance.

Thom was probably about one of the best they had. I liked when they had Rachel Maddow on in the morning, also!

4. talk radio will do all the groundwork for all the obama obstruction
and is the main reason we're in this disaster. and they protect their monopoly- does anyone really believe that americans want to listen to limbaugh and hannity over hartman and shultz and rhodes by a 9 to 1 ratio?- those two bozos have been wrong about absolutely everything important -

one local blowhard reading chamber of commerce talking points can undo the work of thousands of citizens volunteering a few hours and dollars here and there. so how come progressive groups don't recognize those local stations are the centers of power for the GOP and start boycotting and picketing for some balance on the public airwaves? at the moment limbaugh and hannity have 6 hours a day from hundreds of stations- 600 for limbaugh- and both are global warming deniers, basically calling global warming activists and environmentalists communist trying to bring down capitalism, but also enabling flat earthers in the GOP and media.

they hide behind the lie that they are entertainers but they are paul reveres in reverse.

5. Did you read the Bill Press opinion in the Sunday Post?
Edited on Sun Feb-08-09 02:16 PM by LiberalEsto
It was on the back page of the Outlook section today. Press made a lot of excellent good points about the loss of Progressive Talk 1260 and the imbalance in radio talk politics. I believe he said there are 9 hours of on-air conservative talk for every 1 hour of progressive talk radio in the U.S.

Press hosted the early-morning show on AM 1260 until Snyder decided to get rid of all the progressives.

Naturally the Washington Post couldn't let Press's viewpoint just speak for itself, and stuck a snarky headline on it. To wit: "Another Right-Wing Conspiracy in Washington?" This made it seem as though the writer was just another crackpot. To top it off, they splashed big photos of four right-wing talkers like Rush and O'Lielly between the headline and the article by Press. After all, the KKKorporate Media must protect its own.

I think I am going to write Rep. Chris Van Hollen and complain about the lack of balance on the air in the DC area. I'd write to the Post too, but they're beyond hopeless.

On the bright side, at least for me, 105.5FM has become a bluegrass station. Its signal covers northern Virginia and Montgomery County.

6. I'll have to read that. Interestingly, I was listening to 1260 this afternoon around 2:30
and they had Thom Hartmann on. Image that!! I damn near ran off the road!!

The WaPo op-ed page is pretty reich-wing. They're drinking the same kool-aid that the moonie-times and murdoch street journal are.

7. Agreed
Anyone who claims the Post is liberal has his/her head up his/her ass.

The article is on the back page of the opinion section, where they usually run a local opinion piece from Maryland, one from the District, and one from Virginia. It's not on the regular KKKorporate op-ed page, which sucks for the most part.
