As an alumni and fan I am completely embarrassed! For the head coach to say on TV that he did not prepare his team for a Division 2 school - he should be fired. If you can't prepare for Div 2 how can you prepare for Div 1?

Instead of thinking about what UM did and how they feel and what should happen to the coach ... why not smile and feel good along with the Mounties ... who obviously did their best and EARNED the win?

4. That's how I'm taking it. Carr should be ashamed, but... |

let's face it, there's not much joy in winning these early-season "tuneup" games. If Michigan had pulled it out the stories would be about escaping embarrassment, not a victory. Appalachian State had so much more fun winning than Michigan would have had avoiding the humiliating loss.
Also, Appalachian State is not Div II, they're in the former Div IAA. The technical difference is that they don't put enough fans in the stands to qualify as a top-division team. Oh, and they play for a genuine national title, as opposed to the BCS beauty contest plus one game formula. Perhaps the Mountaineers two straight seasons of playoff success produced a sharper squad mentally... maybe they play better as a team because of real playoff experience (instead of the whole game of "if our loss was earlier in the season and the right combination of upsets occurs we get a shot at a "national title..." I don't know who would have won a real playoff last season, but I doubt it would have been Florida. At the very least, it's not obvious that the Gators were the best team... they just lost at a less damaging time than their higher-ranked competition.)

I'm totally embarrassed, but you deserved to win and we didn't. In the end, though, it's just a football game. I got a whole new attitude last year and don't let these things bother me like they used to. With the war, global warming, etc., there are much more important things to spend my energy on.

7. Sharon is right on target. |

It is just a game. Yes, Michigan fans and the usual sports talk radio that goes along with this kind of thing will sting a bit, but perspective here is truly important. As a State fan myself, I now have even more respect (if there wasn't alot already), for everything Sharon says.
I didn't listen to the game except for the very end...in disbelief and shock. I didn't listen much to the State game either. My real bitch right now is this greedy thing called the Big !0 Network. This stinks. It is just a shining example of the ultimate corporate greed that goes on in this country right now. I have even heard staunch Repubs gripe about it.
ASU should savor the day, take the big paycheck, and be a college. I will tear when my Tigers, Wings, (Lions?), Spartans, etc. get stung, but the sun will rise and legacy programs will go on to be legacy programs. Yes, coaching eras will end, but that is a discussion for true fans of any coach's particular team fans.
But wait, my second favorite team (the Cubbies) are in first in the NL Central. Hot damn!!!!

our one disagreement comes on a certain Saturday when us green-blooded folk show no mercy on Mr. Carr and the gang. Actually, beware State's running attack this year.

9. My sister, a MSU fan, was ecstatic |
|
Her hubby's team (the Irish) lost, my team (WMU) lost, but hers won and, even better, her enemy lost.
I always tease her that she enjoys watching Michigan lose more than watching her own team win because her own team wins so few chamionships. I also like to tease her and say that MSU isn't even really Michigan's rival, OSU is. That makes her very angry.

Michigan football fans only pay attention to MSU when MSU beats them. Beating OSU can make the season for the Wolverines, but not beating State. Whereas beating Michigan can make the Spartans' season...

Michigan beating OSU LOL. You guys couldn't even beat ASU (and I'm not talking about Arizona State), let alone Ohio State.
Hey UM might be looking for a new coach soon. John L. Smith is avalible.

16. OK, I have to respond to this, |

For those who do not know, I tend to root for State. I am not bloodthirsty about it, but I needed to say it just the same in fairness to those on this board that are Michigan fans.
After the events of the last two weeks, a John L. comment is in order. John L. squandered what talent he had, especially Drew Stanton. Send him to Michigan, where Carr really has not done a good job in terms of recruiting in recent years, and he has nothing to squander. Chad was never the QB the biased media of this town made him out to be.
Carr represents the last gasp of the Bo era. Bo has turned over in his grave a few times in the past couple weeks...and I couldn't blame him in the least for doing so. Love or hate the man, Bo demanded, and had a way of explaining, excellence. What happens, I think, is that a mafia mentality brews over a period of years, where nothing changes because people cling to old memories. State might have realized this with this new coach, where Michigan has not. Carr is not protégé to Bo in the same way Bo was protégé to Woody, INHO.
