Pro bono counseling for vets with PTSD? |
|
If anyone here knows of a counselor/therapist who does pro bono work for vets with PTSD, one in the Detroit area, and another in the Ann Arbor area, please let me know. (We've got a couple Iraq vets getting the usual handful of pills from the VA hospital with no counseling help.)
Many thanks.

look for what the University can do for the vet in question. Often universities will offer free counseling services as a place to get grad students experience. Don't be freaked out by the idea of a student; they are all interviewed and accepted prior to the experience, supervised during, and can give fresh perspectives that grizzled old pros like myself cannot. Try the hospital first as a guess.
Detroit has 211 services, and you may be able to call that to locate free counseling for vets in the area.
Just some guesses. I hope they help.

2. Have they got insurance? |
|
If so, there are lots of good counselors in the Detroit area. Henry Ford Hospital would be a good starting place, as they have a lot of psych and drug treatment programs, so they should have someone with the backround to help.
Havenwyk Hospital has outpatient care-that's in Auburn Hills. Same with Harbor Oaks in New Baltimore (they have a really good reputation).
If not insured, your friend will have to deal with CMH or The Salvation Army.

Contact the Blue tiger Democrats. They have a list of every attorney in the area who gives pro-bono legal aide to veterans. If you have any questions just call the MDP Blue Tiger Dems.

One of our local vets who is a licensed social worker/counselor stepped forward and has us covered here.
I'm working my way through the A2 VA system to try to track down the right procedure for getting them into counseling there - they claim it should be covered, I'm not sure where the disconnect is coming from.
