Michigan high school senior gets perfect ACT, SAT and PSAT scores

CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Willa Chen has a knack for tough tests
The Detroit News reported Saturday that the 17-year-old senior at southeast Michigan's Canton High School wrote ACT, SAT and PSAT examinations and got perfect scores on all three.

In an obvious understatement, ACT Inc. spokeswoman Mary Owens calls it "quite an accomplishment."

The College Board, made up of 5,000 schools, administers the SAT and PSAT but says it doesn't track statistics on whether anyone has ever scored perfectly on both of its tests.

Chen, who plans to attend Princeton University, says she doesn't think she studied a lot but that she tries to keep learning all the time.

She participates in the Math Olympiad and also finds time to enjoy jazz, tap and ballet dancing.

I am a person that values education and intelligence over athletic ability. I am also a completely disgusted follower of stupid things done by the Detroit Lions. Sheesh.

2. Hey, I totally agree with you

It's just obscene what they pay athletes. And then you look at the $2,600 price tag on some seats at the new Yankee Stadium. It really does make one sick.
The emphasis on sports in this country is crazy. Pump a ton of money into high school sports programs, but it's okay to cut the art budget.

3. It'd be one thing if ALL the students benefited from the Athletics spending ...

... but they don't. Unlike a real "educational" program, the athletics program focuses solely on the 'gifted' and subjects the athletically mundane and average students to derision and abuse. I'm one person who believes we're a nation of couch potatoes ... imbeciles in physical education. Our primary schools COULD focus on offering a grounding in a lifetime of healthy exercise and athletic activity, conferring a comprehension of the benefits of physical activity and exercise. Instead, we divide the students into performers and spectators - mostly the latter.

Part of this is the obsession with competitive team sports instead of individual activities that might fit better into a continuing lifestyle. Football (not soccer), of course, is the most insane. Almost no other sport is so limited in the age range and facilities available. Even under the greatest possible effort, fewer than about 5-10% could ever continue to play football as they grow older ... and clearly not the women, in general. It's fucking insane.
