Organizers of the Stars & Stripes Festival and Fourth of July fireworks show in downtown Mount Clemens plan to charge admission for the first time in 2011 but would add ways for attendees to save money at local bars and restaurants.
Admission would be $3 daily for the festival. On the day of the fireworks, the entry fee would also allow access to the grassy hill area along the Clinton River where hundreds of people sit on blankets and in chairs.
“The era of free events, unfortunately, is drawing to a close,” said Arthur Mullen, executive director of the Mount Clemens Downtown Development Authority, which pays for the fireworks.
A number of private contributors to the fireworks in the past, such as Community Central Bank, are expected to draw back their donations or stop paying entirely, Mullen said. The admission would help the DDA recoup its costs.
