Three district court judges — one from each party that has won the governorship — will be in charge of the next stage of the Minnesota U.S. Senate election, the state Supreme Court said today.
Stearns County Judge Elizabeth Hayden, appointed by former DFL Gov. Rudy Perpich, Hennepin County Assistant Chief Judge Denise Reilly, appointed by former Republican Gov. Arne Carlson and Pennington County Assistant Chief Judge Kurt Marben, appointed by former Gov. Jesse Ventura, were named to the three-judge panel that will decide Republican Norm Coleman's challenge of the recount results. Those results gave Democrat Al Franken a 225-vote lead.
Supreme Court Justice Alan Page's picks mean the panel will be made up of a judge appointed by a Republican, a Democrat and an Independence Party governor.
The three judges may have to drop all their other work for months in order to deal with the weighty case, which will be heard in Ramsey County.
The trial must start by the end of this month. It could take until early Spring to complete.
