Three people were charged Friday with second-degree assault after authorities identified them as participants among a group of protesters that threw a large metal road sign off the Marion Street bridge on Sept. 1, the first day of the Republican National Convention.

One of the three, Bradley N. Crowder, 23, of Austin, Texas, pleaded guilty last week in federal court to making Molotov cocktails that he and another Austin man allegedly intended to use to disrupt the convention.

The complaint filed in Ramsey County District Court lists Crowder's address as the Sherburne County jail in Elk River. Crowder's co-defendants in Ramsey County are Christina R. Vana, 19, of West Bend, Wis., and Karen M. Meissner, 23, of Menomonee Falls, Wis.

1. Disagree
Oh I know I am going to get hell for opening my mouth, but I hope that as my response will be civil, any other responses will be as well.

First off, I am a DFLer. I have worked for years for Democratic candidates in 6 states.

I also own a home in St Paul where I live with my wife.

I support my County Attorney. Simple as that.

These individuals threw a sign off a bridge. What if someone or something was under it? Someone could have gotten hurt.

If the individuals have been identified, they should be charged. Just because they are protesting an unjust war does not give them the right to break the law.

And violence in a protest calling for peace would make many a Civil Rights activist roll over in their grave.

She is doing her job. These individuals broke the law. Simple as that.

2. If no one was hurt, and there was no intent to hurt anyone,
...then "assault" isn't an appropriate charge.

3. Yes it is, see the legal definition of assault
The sign landed 3 feet from a police officer.

2008 Minnesota Statutes
609.02 DEFINITIONS.
Subd. 10.Assault.

"Assault" is:

(1) an act done with intent to cause fear in another of immediate bodily harm or death; or

(2) the intentional infliction of or attempt to inflict bodily harm upon another.

4. I would agree
If the act could have injured someone, it is the appropriate charge.

If I go outside my door, and shoot towards my neighbor's house, but just happen to not hit anything or anyone, would I not be arrested and charged?

5. Okay, if we're going to charge these three
Can we charge all the police that committed assault during the RNC as well? I mean, if we're going to rigidly adhere to the law, then let's see to it that it is applied equally and across the board, yes?

6. these charges may be heavy-handed but....
I have known Susan Gaertner more than 20 years.
she does not file frivolous charges.

I saw her put murderers ==== and I mean the most conscience-free, hateful and dangerous criminals ever in our fair county -- in prison for life.
Ramsey County is safer with those people locked up.

the jury can decide about these new charges. On balance Gaertner is one of the good guys.
