Starting the news with that football player?
Will stay away from local news for at least 24, perhaps 48 hours.
And I am tempted to call the strib to say that if he is on the front page tomorrow, above the fold, I am canceling my subscription.
Of course, 30 years ago, when we first moved here, we canceled the strib when a the front page story was about girls' basketball... After reading the Chicago Tribune for many years, this was a cultural shock.
Some things never change.

1. It is a big regional story |
|
MPR would be foolish to totally ignore it. MPR will switch back to more serious issues soon enough, much quicker than other local media.

2. It just seems like all the local media have been The Brett Favre Show |
|
for the past few days. Geeze, people, it's just a game. You may enjoy it, but it's not actually IMPORTANT, even though it's in the interest of the powers that be (PTB) to have you obsessing over sports instead of noticing what the PTB are up to.
I was grateful for the tornado knocking that overpaid jock off the front pages.

And I was glad we were not planning on going to the Guthrie tonight when the 6:00 PM news started from... the Metrodome!

5. Since the Strib buy out, they have been putting sports a lot on the Front Page. |
|
BF (will he be our best friend?) is a big story here in MN. although I am tired overall of all the Front PAge sports stories as they belong in the Sports Section. MPR has, since the Chamber of Commerce sponsorship, been having sports discussion programs. Not that often but more than before. On the good side, they pull in more listeners to other programs and the news. I actually dislike Golf but found their program one day on it, very interesting.

6. "They belong in the sports section." |
|
Right on Glinda. I plugged in my TV on (whatever day the big announcement was) to tune in and catch the weather on Channel 11. This was 6:06. At 6:16 when they still had the Favre press conference on, I shut it off and unplugged the TV. I later found out from a friend that it was even worse than I thought. She said Channel 11 had cut into the national news at 5:35 to cover the Favre crapola so by the time I tuned in, it had been going for quite some time. What a load of crap. Give me news, weather and sports in that order. Keep the sports in the sports segment where it belongs.
The whole thing was nothing but a publicity stunt anyway. According to a friend, Favre bought a house here in May (closed in June) yet somehow the press conference was "breaking news." Looks like the Vikes are trying to generate excitement so they can drum up support for a new stadium on the taxpayer dime. No surprise there.
