Pawlenty third in straw poll of GOP presidential contenders
http://www.startribune.com/politics/5986617

WASHINGTON – Gov. Tim Pawlenty finished third in a straw poll of potential GOP presidential contenders at a conservative conference in Washington Saturday, receiving only one vote less than second place finisher Mitt Romney.

The poll was one of the first tests of Pawlenty’s impact nationally as he continues to spread his message ahead of a possible presidential run in 2012. He received 73 – or 12 percent – of the 597 votes cast at the Values Voters Summit, hosted by the conservative Family Research Council.

Mike Huckabee was the overwhelming winner with 170 votes.

Pawlenty placed behind Romney, who had 74 votes, and just ahead of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin with 72 and Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., with 71.

Great, now we will have an even more faux-sanctimonious governor in coming weeks reaching to the utterly crazy GOP Primary base.

3. I think he has a good chance in the primaries but not such a good chance in the general election
He will probably win Iowa and that will put him on track to getting the nomination, but it is going to be a lot tougher for him to win over the general population than it will to win the wingnuts. Pawlenty may be able to win the south and the right-wing states like Utah and Idaho in the west but he is going to have a hard time winning his own state. Pawlenty has never won a majority of the vote in a statewide election here, and with his unallotment and his crazy rhetoric in recent months he is more unpopular in this state than ever before. Obama is far more popular here than Pawlenty is and I would not be surprised to see Pawlenty lose his own state by double digits.
