Local Amnesty International activists will present a screening of the acclaimed documentary "Torturing Democracy" at the Oak Street Cinema on Nov 4th at 7 pm. Discussion to follow the film.

"Torturing Democracy" relies on the documentary record to connect the dots in an investigation of harsh interrogations of prisoners in U.S. custody - and points straight to the top. Timely and powerful, at its heart the film is about the rule of law - and how the government pushed it aside despite the fierce resistance of many on the inside.

It features a segment on the "torture memo" written by University of St Thomas law professor Robert Delahunty.

I just received an email of this addition to the viewing>

We've added a guest speaker, human rights lawyer Duane Krohnke, to the events of Nov 4th. He will share his reactions to the film and invite audience members to do the same. The post-film discussion will last about 20 minutes. Also, there will be a party at Stub&Herbs right after the show. (It will also be kind of a birthday party for me.)
Duane Krohnke is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Minnesota Law School where he co-teaches International Human Rights Law. A Rhodes Scholar and graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, he practiced law for 31 years in New York City and Minneapolis, retiring in 2001 from Faegre & Benson. Over the last two decades he has been a pro bono lawyer for asylum-seekers from El Salvador, Colombia, Afghanistan, Somalia and Burma. While at Faegre and Benson he headed the firm's specialization in international dispute resolution.

1. St Thomas students should be notified about the film -
outrageous that someone who wrote a memo authorizing torture is teaching law!!!!
