1. Most can't. They have no power and phone lines are all tied up. |
|
:( It may be days before we can touch base with them.

3. Jackson power is mostly history |
|
My sister-in-law's sister is holed up in Jackson, and they lost power about 3:00pm, it still wasn't on at 9:00pm.
Tupelo has power, but I've heard that columbus and starkville don't.
The storm was still a named storm when it hit here (Tupelo), something I can't remember in 30 years of being here. Other than some downed trees though, we seem to be ok.

Power out for 105 hours.Got it back Sat. around 1pm. Got water and Time Warner got my Roadrunner back on about midnight. They have restored power to about 2/3 of Jackson and are doing a heroic job. Gasoline is the main problem. Have 12 stations within a 3 mile radius- one was open yesterday A.M. with huge lines. Wife and I have full tanks and are not going anywhere not necessary.Violence breaking out because of lack of gas is my main concern. Heard reports of gas being siphoned out of cars at University Med Center where the wife works. People drilling holes into tanks or just crowbarring into gas caps. Police are monitoring gas lines and there is supposed to be a distribution point in Collins(about an hour south) that is sending tankers to Jkson but I'm still waiting to see them. Have helped neighbors w/ cleanup and am ready to help elsewhere but until I'm sure I can replenish what I burn in gas I'm staying close to home. I have family in Sumerall and they are ok. No power or water but they are getting by.

7. Wiggins here! Stranded in Georgia from 08/25 to 09/07.... |
|
back in Mississippi now, 35 miles north of the coast, and happy to be alive and safe. Had to catch a Continental Express flight from Atlanta to Houston, TX, and then back to Jackson...the Gulfport airport is shut down "indefinitely." Wiggins was hard-hit, but nothing like the coast. Power is back on downtown where I live, also telephone, but the water is still unfit to drink. I work in insurance, and we've filed more than 1,000 claims in a small, rural county, and they're still coming in as fast as the phones can ring. I hope all my fellow MS DU'ers are alive and well, and will be back "in touch" very soon.
