Missouri site to fly Confederate flag Sunday

Jefferson City — The Confederate flag is rising again in Missouri, and an NAACP leader is vowing a "drastic" response.

Republican Gov. Matt Blunt has ordered the Confederate flag to fly Sunday at the Confederate Memorial State Historic Site in Higginsville, where an afternoon graveside service is planned to mark Confederate Memorial Day.

The flag will fly for only one day, but a Blunt spokesman said Friday the governor also supports a scholarly review of whether it would be appropriate to again fly the Confederate flag regularly at the historic site.

6. Missouri was a real hotbed

during the Civil War. Here in KC, there are tons of battle sights. Right across the state line is John Brown territory in KS. In Independence, MO, there is still a jail that was used to house abolitionists in the 1800s. The soldiers from MO went across the state line and kidnapped them. The Civil War is a big part of MO history.

8. Mo was a Compromise State. The states were even, KS & Mo

both wanted to be admitted at the same time and the balance in the US legislator was even so comes the "MO Compromise" MO was admitted as a slave state and KS as a Free state trying to keep the balance and avoid the civil war.

Actually some of the bloodiest battles were fought in MO, You had Jesse James fighting with Quantrells Raiders, you had John Brown and his raiders, crossing over into KS. People were split on the allegiance and beliefs.

In MO, the state was actually split with the southern part, maybe around KC, fighting for the confederacy and the northern part against slavery.

In the St. Joe museum, they display both uniforms. One guy on one side of the street may be pro slavery and across the street another one was aginst it, so you truly had brother against brother, neighbor against neighbor. It was more bloody around here than in the south a lot of ways as down south, it was more Confederacy against Union.

although it wasn't your fault. I grew up in Missouri and would still think the whole civil war happened in Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania if I hadn't loved history enough to find out on my own. History teaching is atrocious in this country.

Actually at the time of the Civil War two thirds of all Missouri residents were southern born. The counties along the Missouri River were known then and today as Little Dixie.

Anyone that flies a Confederate flag needs to either get their heads examined, re-educate their elementary American history or get counseling for the hatred they obviously thrive on.

Seen a few here and there... dumb-asses hang them along with the "United States" Red White and Blue. They're the ones that should "love us or leave...!"

I know I am in the minority here. I really don't see how allowing people to honor their ancestors historical sacrifice can be insulting to anyone. The Flag, any flag is just a symbol. Like any symbol it can be misused as this one has. Like any symbol it represents different things to different people.

African Americans. It's way more than just a symbol to them. The NAACP was very upset by the decision to fly this flag.

If you enjoy history, go see the old jail in Independence. There are tour guides there who can fill you in on the gory details of attrocities committed by the pro-slavery group in MO. I know - John Brown's abolitionists were not nice people either. It was a horrible time in our local history. All the more reason not to dredge it all up by flying that Dixie flag anymore. Blunt is a friggin idiot and insensitive to boot.

Missouri did. The Democrat Governor (Fox) and the Democrat majority legislature (ironic isn't it) voted for secession and drafted a confederate constitution. They were forced to flee when the Federal govt occupied the capital, installed a puppet government and imposed Marshall law.

The Elected governor and legislature convened in exile in Texas for the duration of the war.
