Girl, 6, Fatally Shoots 2-Year-Old Brother

MONTGOMERY CITY, Mo. (AP) - A 6-year-old girl playing with her father's gun accidentally shot and killed her 2-year-old brother at their home, authorities said.

Chase Yordt was killed Sunday morning. It was unclear where the girl found the handgun, Highway Patrol Sgt. Paul Reinsch said.

The bullet first hit the girl in the foot, Reinsch said.

Authorities were deciding whether to bring charges against the father.

1. Please if you own guns please, please put them in a lock box and hide them
away when you're little ones aren't looking. My Dad is a gun owner and until i was about 15 i had no idea at all where he stored them.

Guns Don't Die, People Do.

4. These things happen far too often
I wish people would wake up and realize that guns do not make their homes any safer, and in fact make them much more dangerous.

If this father was keeping his guns where the kids had easy access to them he should be charged.

I hope the girl is able to recover from this, this could easily be something that haunts her for the rest of her life. It is so incredibly sad.

7. sounds like a perfect Bush death penalty case to me. Go get her Bush
She must have had strong fingers or the gun had a light trigger.

8.  The bullet first hit the girl in the foot
Damn, killed by a ricocheting bullet. Sad, kind of like Connelly and Kennedy. Yes, Dad needs to be made to pay for this one. Trigger locks at minimum are available everywhere and are cheap.

12. And why don't gun makers
include trigger locks for all guns the sell? I read once that the cost was less than $1 per gun.

14. The major ones all have for several years
Edited on Mon Aug-01-05 05:11 PM by slackmaster
Colt, Ruger, Smith & Wesson, Glock, and SIG Sauer all ship good trigger locks with new pistols. I'm sure most of the others do as well.

Trigger locks will be mandatory if S.397 (immunity bill for gun manufacturers) becomes law. That was a major concession won by gun control supporters in the Senate.

You may recall that "We support mandatory trigger locks" was a Democratic Party platform plank in 2000.

15. Most guns are older.
Remember, a gun has a useable lifespan of nearly 100 years if reasonably cared for, so the vast majority of the firearms in the United States were built before trigger locks were readily available or promoted.

By most estimates, there are 200 to 225 million privately owned firearms in the US today, with 10-12 million new firearms being purchased every year. At the same time, about 5 million guns a year are retired due to wear or damage.

Doing the math on that shows that, even if trigger locks were required on all gun sales tomorrow, it would take 40-50 years to get the bulk of guns protected by them.

9. Oh isn't it just great that CCW is legal in MO?
When it was being debated, I wrote many state legislators asking for stiffer penalties for adults who allowed kids to get their hands on guns. But one legislator replied that this addition to the CCW bill would be an infringement on the citizens' right to bear arms.

I guess the right of this 2 year old to LIVE just isn't as important as his dad's right to carry a gun. :eyes:

13. We could solve over 90% of the
world's problems if only people who really wanted children and really wanted to care for those children, and had the means needed to take care of their children...were the only people who had children or who adopted children.
These children weren't loved enough for the parents to take the minimum of precautions.
A loaded gun with a six-yr. old and a two-yr. old.
Whose values are those?
