Contractors who took over Missouri’s state-run motor-vehicle offices this year bought televisions, computers, fax machines, furniture and other office equipment, all for as little as $151, records show.
The documents, which were obtained Thursday from the Missouri Revenue Department, show that the contractors were allowed to use state-owned equipment for at least two months before they were asked to compensate the state.
The bids were requested nearly two months after state auditor Claire McCaskill’s office first raised questions about what was happening to state equipment in offices that were going private.
