Diebold chosen for KC elections
KC election board selects Diebold system

By DAVE HELLING

The Kansas City Star

The Kansas City Election Board has chosen Ohio-based Diebold Election Systems to provide hundreds of new touch-screen and optical scan voting machines for city voters in 2006.

All four board members endorsed the selection Thursday, despite what they all said were problems with Diebold’s “image.” For months, election activists, in Kansas City and around the nation, have criticized the company, claiming its election software could be corrupted and votes altered, either by outsiders or by election workers and candidates.

“All you have to do is do a search on the Internet and you can see all these allegations,” said board member Joe Serrano. “What will happen if we buy this system and there are problems?”

Diebold has long denied the accusations. “Our machines are extremely safe, secure, and accurate,” said David Bear, speaking for the company. “We’re very happy and excited to be bringing this technology to the voters in Kansas City.”

Yeah, I'll bet you're happy Mr. BEAR

1. Well, just great; KC and StL join the Republican corporate voting scandal
that will disenfranchise voters. All assurances to the contrary will not convince me that wise people are in charge of our political system. The system is broken. It was intentionally done. And a dumbed down American public is too effen hooked on their entertainment and leisures to give a care.

But the goddamned economy is great ain't it? Never mind those thousands losing employment from the big corps. Never mind those 'oldtimers' who had pensions ripped away and never any word of recoupment. Never mind medical cares, insurance, and prescription costs--we don't understand that shit no how, just tell how we gonna sign up for the bestest kind, ya know? Hell I got plastic Jack for the shit I need, debt is just a four letter word, you better give the blood pressure a check before you stroke out.

I've always known a minority existence, but I never thought that I could be banished ignominiously. To be retired and despised for believing democratic principles, for never having let go of Ideals for which my ancestors fought and died is a heavy burden that gets heavier every goddamned day that this administration is free to wreck. To speak--it's just background noise; to write--who reads? To bear arms--against whom? To live a just example--yeah, that's been real successful. To be true to self and friends--well, no one will take that away from me.

No one will want that, yet.

2. They've been all around Wsbg too.
Supposedly we will also be going to electronic voting in the next couple of years.
I'm planning on attending the next few meetings and throwing a public fit. I've also written a LTTE.

5. Busy and tired.
Flirting w/ a real LIVE man too. A well-read, lib man who is not gay and not 19(read: someone I can actually date) is quite a find in my neck of the woods.
So how's your snow day treating you?

I have no complaints.

But man, it's cold out there.

Hubby went out to go to work today and the seatbelts in his truck were frozen. So he stayed home. Not a good day to be unbelted.

Cool news about the man. You deserve that :)

9. Thanks.
No school here today either. I already had the day off and was supposed to meet up w/ him for coffee but-you know how that goes.
Instead, my daughter and I played in the snow, drank hot cocoa, made cookies and listened to music-her choice. Very surprised that she decided on Coltrane today! Pleasant surprise.

These people have proven themselves to be some kind of stupid throughout the entire process. It's time to expose them.

Edit to add: I didn't get a snow day!

12. There's a meeting on Saturday.
Californo's in Westport at 3:30. They have actual meetings. I usually do "background" stuff, like making propaganda materials.

16. If the sidwalks are still iced over, I'll do that.
It's just over on Pennsylvania, but that can seem like miles.
