Upcoming KC area events - in no particular order

1. Mopaul's Blues Band will be playing at Jazz at 39th and State Line on Friday, Feb 3 from 7 to 11. We had a large group last month and a great time was had by all. So come and join us for fabulous music and wonderful food!

2. On Thurs, Feb 2, Mopaul will be a featured player at the kkfi-fm harmonica blowout at BB's BBQ at 85th and holmes. Starts around 6ish. Lots of harmonica players; Mopaul says bring your own ear plugs.

3. Evlbstrd has graciously offered to host our March meetup on March 17 at his house in the Westport area. We are planning on potluck. PM Evl or me for the address. More specific details - time, etc will be posted here.

4. Our Feb meetup will most likely be our last at The Flea Market, as they will be closing and turned into a Hooter's. Several of you have asked that we change the date from the 3rd Wed. Let me know what day works best for you and we will set a date. I can do Thursdays but can't get there till 8ish.

5. We have tentatively decided to hold future meetups at The Peanut at 50th and Main. Their wings are THE BEST! It is also an intimate little bar and I think a perfect setting for us. If you aren't familiar with KC, The Peanut is not far from The Flea Market. It is just south (about 3 blocks) from The Plaza.

I got a good Technical Writing job yesterday (an actual job, not a "contract"!), so I'll be hanging out here a little less, but I expect most of my other activities to continue in the evening hours.

10. The food isn't very good, to start with.

I've gone to the Flea Market for over twenty years. They have the best burgers in town. And I personally am pissed about having a Hooter's in Westport. Starbuck's was bad enough. This is my neighborhood, dammit, not just a "party" district.

11. Westport Flea Market

A report in the Kansas City Star last week suggested that it might not be all over for the Flea Market:

A local restaurateur hopes to save Westport Flea Market & Bar & Grill from the wrecking ball and a future as a Hooters restaurant.

Joe Zwillenberg, owner of Joe Joe's Italian Eatery and Joe's Burger Joint on Main Street, is in negotiations to take over the white and blue building at 817 Westport Road and keep the current concept. The "Flea" has a longtime, loyal following.

Hooters wants to buy the building with plans to raze it and put one of its restaurants in its place.

Mel Kleb, the building's owner, said Monday there were "negotiations in many areas" but declined to comment further. Zwillenberg had no comment.

We'll see--obviously I'd much prefer this over Hooters.

BTW, I'll miss the 2/15 meeting.
