1. Tell me why I should support Nixon
The things I've heard about him since moving to MO in 1998 don't make me want to support him. So, tell me why I should.

And, no, because he's a Dem isn't enough.

2. Two words:
Matt Blunt.

You want him to have a second term? Then don't vote for Nixon.

Sometimes you have to go with the because he's a Dem choice.

3. that's not good enough.
Today should be the perfect explanation of why.

DINOS don't help. They are in collusion with the enemy, and I'd rather support a non-DINO for governor.

4. Why you should support Nixon??
Well, assuming we are not speaking of Richard Hillmouse Nixon, it's a valid question.

But, when you start out with "things I've heard about him since moving to MO in 1998 don't make me want to support him" is a lot like the "Have you stopped beating your wife?" question.

Why not start by telling us "the things I've heard about him" and we can either deny them, if not true, or explain them if they are.

It is really hard to counter whispered gossip and lies, particularly if one isn't even told what things were said. Karl Rove's mother taught him that lesson right after teaching him to tie his shoes, and before teaching him his ABCs.

If you want to clear the air, and have us give you good reasons, be upfront and tell us what was said.

6. ok, here's a few things I tracked down as to WHY
"Nixon asserted that the Democratic Party needs more candidates, nationally and in the state, who reflect mainstream America. For example, he said he was Missouri's only Democratic statewide candidate to embrace the state constitutional amendment defining marriage as only between a man and woman." (from an expired link on stltoday.com)

'Nixon was also asked if he supported the law that requires a permit to carry a gun.

"I think people buying a gun should have to get a background check," Nixon said. "Of course I'm the guy, who for my sister on her thirtieth birthday, got her a gun rack for her pick-up truck."' http://www.fultonsun.com/articles/2004/12/14/news/018news13.txt

"Well, as Senate candidate, Jay Nixon was a perfect New Democrat, one of Rep. Frost's "moderates." As State Attorney General, he moved to end financial support for desegregating schools, not bothering to gain support of the African American
community. He assumes, as New Democrats do, that he could inherit the Black vote against a Republican." (Jesse Jackson, Sr. - http://www.rainbowpush.org/commentaries/1998/112298.html)

----------------------------------

Considering my support of fully equal rights for gays and lesbians, opposition to concealed carry, and my belief that Nixon has not done much to hold onto the African-American vote as a Democrat...

Yes, there are actual reasons I oppose him. I think we should be able to find a true progressive to run against him in the primary. Sure, you can make the argument that a progressive couldn't win outside of St. Louis and KC, and you might have a point...but I don't want to compromise just because it's easier.

If Nixon wins the primary, I may vote for him in the GE. It depends on what I hear from him during the campaign. I've compromised before and voted for moderate Dems that I didn't think really represented me...

But I think Missouri can do better.

7. I basically agree with you but if I can obtain a 80% improvement
from Matt Blunt to Nixon, I will take it in a heart beat.

8. Blunt is a friggin nightmare
I am not crazy about Nixon either. I work in one of the school districts he spent years fighting in court over the deseg plan. That left a really sour taste in my mouth.

But Blunt's policies are really hurting children. My district has moved on, and hasn't suffered much from what Nixon tried to do. But I see EVERY DAY the effects of taking health care away from kids, the effects of cutting the foster grandparents program. I have a student whose family is now literally destitute because they lost foster grandparents income. There are many other bad moves by Blunt that will cost this generation of kids more than they can afford to lose. His plan to take local control away from school districts (the 65% plan) will be devastating to hundreds of thousands of kids in Missouri.

So you bet Nixon has my support. If Mickey Mouse ran against Matt Blunt, I would support him.

Sometimes you vote to get RID OF elected officials more than to put someone in office.

9. Agreed...
I am in community mental health and we have clients right now who are a danger to themselves and others who are on the streets without meds. People ARE dying from the Medicaid cuts.

11. Wow be sure and post it
Here is something else to be on the lookout for - someone who is in a position to know told me that the MO legislature is ready to pass a voter ID bill that would require a $35 voter ID.

12. Are you kidding me? Is there a bill to that effect?
That would cement GOP control, it would also set off a wildfire of national criticism.

18. That's not it
This bill would require a separate voter ID. Not any ole picture ID. Hence, the $35 fee. What is interesting to me is that background checks also cost $35 in Missouri. And with an SS number, a background check is easy to get.

22. Oh I will definitely post info when I get it.
Another tidbit is that this bill will put money in the pockets of Blunt's cronies who he gave the driver's license bureaus to. That is where the voters will go to get that $35 voter ID.

Privatization, ain't it grand?

13. Those damn bastards
Remember how Blunt said he was cutting Medicaid so he could spend money on education? Guess what? He ain't spending any more money on education now than he was before he cut Medicaid. He is a lying sack of shit.

BTW, I work in MO but I live in Kansas. My sister has a mental illness. We will never let her move out of Kansas because taking care of her and others with mental illnesses is one thing Kansas gets right. The mental health services in our county are awesome. I shudder to think where we would be today without that support for her.

20. Yes, they are losing their base over these Medicaid cuts
Dumbest thing they have done in years. I wasn't all that crazy about Holden but he did try to increase sin taxes to pay for Medicaid and education. That sure makes more sense than taking health care away.

Now Blunt is pissing off the religious right over his support of stem cell research. Poor baby can't win for losin these days. LOL
