It's a private office now, decorated with flags and americana everywhere, but that's a different story, There was a man there needing to renew his license, they wouldn't let him use his original birth certificate and he was pissed. " I've had this birth certificate for 51 years and it's been good for everything I've ever needed". I butted in and told him he needed a state embossed seal for fifteen dollars, the clerk verified this, "Why do I need it" he said, so I chimed in again "It's to prove you're not a terrorist". "It's a goddamn tax" he snorted and stomped out pissed off, and it is an extortion of every driver needing a new license in this state. I bet they hear this every day.

He only has to haul his birth certificate around.
As I understand it, women are going to have to take their birth certificate as well as any and all marriage certificates and any and all divorce papers. I don't know, if their husband dies and they remarry, do they also have to take along the death certificate? Its insane.

13. If they changed their name. |
|
I realize that probably means the majority of married women, but it's a matter of change of name...it comes off as somewhat discriminatory, but one could argue that the whole idea of a woman taking her husband's name is inherently sexist
The fact is, that ANYONE who's changed their name will have to face the same thing...if their current name doesn't match their birth certificate.

2. I work at a local public health dept |

We sell LOTS more birth certiifcates every day than we used to. And lots of gripes!! (BTW-we don't get one penny ourselves, it goes to social programs) I think that it is a way to have them funded. I think that $8 of $15 goes to seniors and the rest goes to various others. Women do not have to have a marriage certificate if their name is on their social security card. One must bring a ss card, a birth certificate (they tell us that the original hospital ones wont work) and a piece of mail from your home address.
The thing that gets me is that these things are extremely easy to get. Anyone can walk in and get a birth certificate OR Social security card. Illegal people used to go to cemetarys, pick a deceased child who would have been their age, and go apply for this stuff. Then they could work, get credit and who knows what else.
Anyway, I think it is a weird idea since it doesnt "prove" anything. How is it more secure?

3. In my case, I have to send off for my BC from another state. |
|
It's already been sixteen weeks and there has been no word.
Good thing I don't need to renew for about 18 more months!

5. So the one issued by KCMO - is that not official anymore? |
|
I got a copy of mine about 10 years ago from the city. I don't remember if there is a seal on it or not.

6. It is really the pits if you were born in another state! |

You cannot get your certificate in 10 minutes like you can in Missouri! I tell everyone I know, especially if they were born elsewhere, to start getting one a few months before you have to renew!
We were told that the DMV here would not accept certificates with no seal.

Mine is up in July, I'm not sure if I'll even renew. It's not the money, it's the idea that the birth certificate I have won't work. I don't like extortion, that's all this is plain and simple.

I had my license renewed a couple weeks ago and I just used what looked like a xeroxed copy of my birth certificate. It didn't look official or anything; being copied and tilted off the paper some.... that's messed up. Oh well, my mom was with me and I'll pretend she would have yelled at them if they refused my birth.

11. Different offices use different rules |
|
My wife went to renew hers, she had gotten all the information that was listed as well as having to go to Jeff City and wait in line to replace her SS card. When she got to the renewal line, they took her old license and gave her a new one. She didn't have to show anyone anything. Good thing as we don't get mail at our home ever, we have a PO box and I don't think that's a legal address. But they probably wouldn't have asked for it...
On another note, I recieved a card in my PO box for validation of our home address and needing my drivers license and all. Since the Post Office closes at 4:00, makes it a little difficult to work around, I knocked on the door and the PO lady came out, I showed her my license and the card I got, all filled in prior, and she asked for my auto insurance card. Why do I need auto insurance for my PO box?
