First up is Rhonda Criss Lokeman for her editorial in today's Kansas City Star.
FOUNDERS FORESAW ARROGANCE OF POWERThe People are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty. Thomas Jefferson
Prior to the adoption of our Constitution, the founders debated the consequences of putting so much power in the hands of one man, a president.
Although the British monarchy was closer in view, the founders often turned to the Roman Empire for anecdotal evidence that absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Executive authority, if left unchecked by the legislative and judicial branches, could prove catastrophic for the new nation.
The legislature would affirm the people’s wishes and preserve the Constitution, even if that meant throwing out the elected executive.
