129 Signatures Short

An attempt to topple Mayor Mark Funkhouser of Kansas City came up just short of the required number of signatures Saturday, but recall organizers vowed to seek a re-count.

Election authorities reported the recall petition drive had gathered 16,821 valid signatures of registered voters — 129 short of the 16,950 required.

'Tis a shame. It's unlikely that his successor would have been much of an improvement, but our city hall is so dysfunctional and ineffective almost any change would be worth a try.
